Manchin calls for deal with McCarthy on spending cuts: 'We have a debt problem'
Washington Examiner ^ | January 18, 2023 | Samantha-Jo Roth

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is breaking with President Joe Biden on the debt ceiling, calling for Democrats to work with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on a compromise to lift the nation’s borrowing limit.

“Well, we have to work together. It’s going to take — it’s bipartisan. It’s always been bipartisan as far as the debt ceiling,” Manchin said in an interview on Fox Business. ”I think what we have to do is realize that we have a problem. We have a debt problem.

Manchin said he's already spoken with McCarthy on the issue.

House Republicans are expected to use the nation’s debt limit as leverage to push for policy changes, setting off a standoff that could shake global markets. McCarthy, who is pressing for spending cuts as part of any deal as a concession to his right flank in order to become speaker, has called on Democrats to engage in negotiations with Republicans. Democrats and the Biden administration say they won’t allow Republicans to pressure them to cut federal programs.

Manchin actually had something of a career as a businessman, before turning to full time grifting politics. The same cannot be said of either McCarthy or Biden.

Ds will have a PR problem if they won’t compromise. Raise the limit, but cancel some spending. Imminently fair.

There is a spending problem.

Spending, which no one likes, is a euphemism for government services, which most voters love.

That's why the notion of cutting spending in the abstract is very popular but actually cutting specific programs, where real voters are receiving the benefit, has proven to be almost impossible.

I expect this time will be pretty much the same.

How many budget surpluses have we had in recent decades? How many budget deficits?

The total debt was about$9 trillion when Obama became president. Now we are at $31 trillion?

And that doesn’t include over $100 trillion in long term liabilities for social security and other programs.

The nation may go broke eventually.

“realize that we have a problem”

None of them knew there was a problem three weeks ago when they passed the 1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill.....which none of them even read? and 18 Republicans joined to pass it.

Now they are alarmed, and we are supposed to believe that they are concerned? False drama.

Want to see what happened to ancient civilization like Rome when they went down this path?

Manchin is overall a scumbag, but sometimes useful. He’s blocking the Senate from abolishing the filibuster rule, which is a very big deal.
