In the wake of the 12th wettest start to a year on record, concerns over where that water is ending up have risen. Lake levels have risen as well, but have water releases from Shasta Dam hampered that storage?
Well right now we’ve had a spectacular two weeks; the lake has come up 50 feet since the first of the year, which is tremendous news for us. What we’re doing right now though is holding back every last drop of water we can because we started so low.
So right now we’re doing minimum releases out of Shasta, out of Keswick; downstream of that, the creeks were running really high because of all the rain so that was what was impacting all the people down south of us," explained Don Bader, the Area Manager of the Bureau of Reclamation
The swollen river and creek levels were not an impact of the dam's outflows, but what explains the ever-changing release levels?
It's all about electricity demand -- Bader explained that demand for electricity peaks in the morning and again in the early evening, and that corresponds with those higher amounts of water released.
On the whole, however, the same amount of water is released in any given day.

That amount is at a minimum,
dictated by both electricity
and the state
mandated release value
for wildlife. .

We Californians have decided with a left-right coalition to keep our rivers alive with the following watershed allocation:
50% for the rivers
40% for agriculture
10% for municipalities
In short years ag and the rivers are cut equally.

If only California had some other power source that could be dispatched according to demand, then they wouldn’t need to let water out of the reservoirs to make power. If only there were some other way to make power. I wonder if you could burn something in a boiler to make steam to feed a turbine. I wish somebody would invent something like that. Maybe I’ll patent it.
With all that water filling up reservoirs, there must be a corresponding ocean level drop.

Thanks, Preston. You f’in simpleton. This kind of gibberish is why I gave up on local news decades ago. The Bureau of Reclamation publishes comprehensive data every day. Just under 20k cubic feet per second in today; 1.5K out to spin the turbines.that’s really all there is to it

I remember Shasta sodas as being cheap, but not really very good.
I think they had a bottling plant in Hayward.

You go downstream at the turbine outflow and fish for 60 pound catfish. That’s the way we did it in Tennessee back in the day.
Maybe they can have urine dams.
Have people drink lots beer and, of course Shasta to generate electricity at peak hours.
A win-win(except for the smell, pollution and esthetics of it all.
