Eating one fish from U.S. lakes or rivers likened to drinking month's worth of contaminated water

Eating one freshwater fish caught in a river or lake in the United States is the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals," new research said on Tuesday.

The invisible chemicals, called PFAS, were first developed in the 1940s to resist water and heat and are now used in items such as non-stick pans, textiles, fire suppression foams and food packaging.

But the indestructibility of PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, means the pollutants have built up over time in the air, soil, lakes, rivers, food, drinking water and even our bodies.

David Andrews, a senior scientist at the non-profit Environmental Working Group, which led research, told Agence France-Presse he grew up catching and eating fish.

"I can no longer look at a fish without thinking about PFAS contamination," said Andrews, one of the study's authors.

The findings were "particularly concerning due to the impact on disadvantaged communities that consume fish as a source protein or for social or cultural reasons," he added.

"This research makes me incredibly angry because companies that made and used PFAS contaminated the globe and have not been held responsible."

Patrick Byrne, an environmental pollution researcher at the U.K.'s Liverpool John Moores University not involved in the research, said PFAS are "probably the greatest chemical threat the human race is facing in the 21st Century".

"This study is important because it provides the first evidence for widespread transfer of PFAS directly from fish to humans," he told AFP.

There’s a BIG difference between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan vs Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

So here’s the issue: how much of any one “toxic” chemical is in any given fish? Were any fish sampled and found to have toxic levels? From the fact THAT’S not in the news, I’ll presume the answer is a big, fat, hairy NO. So this fear porn is every bit as fake as a porn actress’s desire to sleep with you.

I know they don’t recommend more than one meal of great lakes fish a month.

Old white dudes who gosh are suddenly important ?
Whaaat?
Oh wait a minute, they obviously think that people OTHER that good ole white guys are fishing, so this issue is then important.

There are exaggerations and improper generalizations in the article. The main PFAS threat is probably from plastic items in and around houses and plastics shops.

Interesting to me - our product liability insurance carrier just asked us to verify that we don’t use any PFAs in the products we make and sell (we don’t). Now I see this article. I guess there is another states’ class action lawsuit brewing.

Fish are racist!

Especially the white perch - but as always, the black bass get a pass.

Research shows:
2007 Collapse of a fish population after exposure to a synthetic estrogen Municipal wastewaters are a complex mixture containing estrogens and estrogen mimics that are known to affect the reproductive health of wild fishes. ... Within this group of substances, the estrogen used in birth-control pills, EE2, is one of the more potent estrogens present (9) and has been linked to the feminization of male fishes in rivers receiving municipal wastewater (4, 6). - https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.0609568104
Human drugs make fish flounder 2012 - https://www.nature.com/articles/nature.2012.11843 Contraceptives and antidepressants can reduce fish reaction times and reproductive rates. Scientists have known for years that human medications, from anti-inflammatories to the hormones in birth-control pills, are ending up in waterways and affecting fish and other aquatic organisms. But researchers are only beginning to compile the many effects that those drugs seem to be having. And it isn't good news for the fish....Female fathead minnows seem to be unaffected by the chemical, but at concentrations of fluoxetine that are roughly comparable to the highest levels documented in fresh water, male minnows start to spend more time building their nests. When the dose is increased tenfold, the males "become obsessive, to the point they're ignoring the females", Klaper said.
2020 Scientists have found estrogen at as much as 16 times that concentration in streams adjacent to sewage treatment plants. Fish exposed to even small amounts of estrogen produce fewer males. A biologist conducted experiments with North American freshwater fish called least killifish. She found that fish exposed to estrogen in concentrations of 5 nanograms per liter in controlled lab conditions had fewer males and produced fewer offspring. Scientists have found estrogen at as much as 16 times that concentration in streams adjacent to sewage treatment plants. - https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/10/201023123100.htm

But the indestructibility of PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, means the pollutants...

...have no discernible metabolic impact on a living things.

Come fish the Carson River or Lahotan Reservoir.

Don't eat the quicksilver fish...

If these chemicals are so indestructible, that means they’re pretty non-reactive, so how toxic can they be?
