Eating one fish from U.S. lakes or rivers likened to drinking month's worth of contaminated water

Eating one freshwater fish caught in a river or lake in the United States is the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals," new research said on Tuesday.

The invisible chemicals, called PFAS, were first developed in the 1940s to resist water and heat and are now used in items such as non-stick pans, textiles, fire suppression foams and food packaging.

But the indestructibility of PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, means the pollutants have built up over time in the air, soil, lakes, rivers, food, drinking water and even our bodies.

David Andrews, a senior scientist at the non-profit Environmental Working Group, which led research, told Agence France-Presse he grew up catching and eating fish.

"I can no longer look at a fish without thinking about PFAS contamination," said Andrews, one of the study's authors.

The findings were "particularly concerning due to the impact on disadvantaged communities that consume fish as a source protein or for social or cultural reasons," he added.

"This research makes me incredibly angry because companies that made and used PFAS contaminated the globe and have not been held responsible."

Patrick Byrne, an environmental pollution researcher at the U.K.'s Liverpool John Moores University not involved in the research, said PFAS are "probably the greatest chemical threat the human race is facing in the 21st Century".

"This study is important because it provides the first evidence for widespread transfer of PFAS directly from fish to humans," he told AFP.

Pretty soon the only thing we can eat safely is bugs. Bill Gates says they are delicious. Go figure.

Even if the oceans lakes and rivers were perfectly clean I wouldn't eat seafood. I just don't like the way it tastes. But the prospect of ingesting mercury and other nasty stuff makes me even more glad that I don't eat it.

Well yeah, in general lawsuits and government actions have been getting payouts from corporations for decades.
I was just referring to this as a specific case.

“If a person consumes these fish 3 times per week, how many years is he expected to die before a person that doesn’t?”

Eat these fish 3 meals a days for life and I bet you’re still doing less harm than taking the jab.

These Marxists are working hard to convince us we need to eat bugs and pay lots of money to to “fix the planet”.

And feel guilty while doing it.

Terrible name. They do last “forever” in the sense that they don’t magically disappear. But they typically get caught in sediment; or washed out to sea and THEN caught in sediment. The implication that our rivers and lakes are endlessly accumulating more and more simply is a deliberately false one.
