Eating one freshwater fish caught in a river or lake in the United States is the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals," new research said on Tuesday.
The invisible chemicals, called PFAS, were first developed in the 1940s to resist water and heat and are now used in items such as non-stick pans, textiles, fire suppression foams and food packaging.
But the indestructibility of PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, means the pollutants have built up over time in the air, soil, lakes, rivers, food, drinking water and even our bodies.
David Andrews, a senior scientist at the non-profit Environmental Working Group, which led research, told Agence France-Presse he grew up catching and eating fish.
"I can no longer look at a fish without thinking about PFAS contamination," said Andrews, one of the study's authors.
The findings were "particularly concerning due to the impact on disadvantaged communities that consume fish as a source protein or for social or cultural reasons," he added.
"This research makes me incredibly angry because companies that made and used PFAS contaminated the globe and have not been held responsible."
Patrick Byrne, an environmental pollution researcher at the U.K.'s Liverpool John Moores University not involved in the research, said PFAS are "probably the greatest chemical threat the human race is facing in the 21st Century".
"This study is important because it provides the first evidence for widespread transfer of PFAS directly from fish to humans," he told AFP.

Whatever became of the mercury in tuna thing from the 70’s?
“Damn. Now I want some catfish.”
Cooked on a gas stove
And deep fried in lard
They are succeeding. GE paid billions to clean/dredge parts of the Hudson River.
I read recently that consuming iodine helps to remove mercury. Fish have iodine.
When I want fish, I have two favorite fishing spots:
1) A place nobody knows about called Long John Silver’s. I think there’s one left in my area and it’s not exactly an area that I like to go to.
2) Another place where I catch little square fish. They come with a bun and cheese and I get extra tartar sauce. I think the place is called McDonald’s.
Don’t tell anyone about my favorite fishing spots!
How about all of the estrogen that has been dumped into the water supply via wide spread use of birth-control pills?
So we can cause it and cure it at the same time?
Imagine what it’s like to the sushi eaters.
Crap....I’ve been dead for years...and never knew it.
FWIW Joe Rogan said he was eating sardines several times a week and then mercury came up in his blood tests. Again, FWIW.
More enviro-nonsense. They’re called “forever chemicals” because they ae almost chemically inert. If they won’t stick to food at +400F, how the heck can the body metabolize them?
I thought that was PCBs.
They tested whether consuming fiber helps to remove these things. It does.
How about we’re doomed!
Just eat your Cricket Bran and be happy. Only healthy indoor raised crickets.
No free-range veggie eating crickets.
that is odd.
Mercury is a top of the food chain issue.
These Marxists are working hard to convince us we need to eat bugs and pay lots of money to to “fix the planet”.
It was but they will get corporations to pay for PFAs as well. I think here's a recent example: https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/3m-others-reach-65-mln-deal-with-ny-town-over-pfoa-drinking-water-2021-07-22/
Eagle wings, panther flanks and manatee bites. 😳👍
