What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.

“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.

For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.

“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.

Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

Yes, that. This place is failing on SO many fronts it’s not even funny.

In other news, FS has decided he has too many errands to run today so Ma’s errands take a back seat. The Mom Errands have been rescheduled for tomorrow morning, after his doctor appointment. We’ll see.

When they got back from their recent trip West, he said he was never going to fly again. He doesn’t like it anyway, but I’m tempted to ask if that means that he’s not interested in driving the U-Haul and flying back.

How hard is it to adjust one’s schedule to fit a parental unit instead of expecting that unit to adjust to yours? Nevermind. That probably falls into the category of “Questions With No Answers.”

It’s all in one’s prioritization. Maybe it won’t be pouring rain tomorrow. (Also, I haven’t forgotten why you don’t have your own car, after we paid for one!)

Didn’t you have a truck-driver friend who was going to drive the U-Haul?

Answer, it is often hard. However, it is possible. It may matter that I have experience with Mrs. ArGee's parental unit and she doesn't have to work for a living. When they need me they adapt to my work schedule.

Yes. He is on stand-by, as it were.

I know where I fit in here, and that’s OK. What goes around, comes around. I may not live to see it, but I it will happen.

If I think about our car, I will get upset again, and I’m working very hard at trying to erase the entire episode.

I try to adapt to everyone’s schedule. I mean, after all, what have I got to do that’s so important? They both work and I understand that, so I’m not demanding. But if he’s taken the week off to recover from his two weeks in Maryland, then...

How hard is it to fit a mom, who wants 45 minutes of his time, maximum, to make that time for the mom? Must be really difficult. More difficult than I ever imagined it could be.

But it’s OK. I’ll be back in the Rockies by the end of the year and FS and PW won’t have to worry about how much of their time I’m demanding.

I don’t want you to be upset, so don’t.

Around here, Frank is having a Learning Experience cleaning bathrooms, and Kathleen is doing math worksheets.

Frank is supposed to be learning to keep his hands to himself, but I understand he has not learned it, so he will clean all the bathrooms again tomorrow.

Oh, dear. I hope Frank is a good learner, but it sounds as if he needs a little more incentive. I have a bathroom he can clean...

The rain has quit for now, but I simmered so much I had to write in my journal to get rid of the heat I was feeling towards a couple of people. I feel better now, but not great. I want to just pack up and leave, put my stuff in storage and rent an RV until the apartment is ready. At least that would give me time to find a car that FS says I shouldn’t be driving. GAH!!!

What’s worse: Venting on Facebook or venting on FR?

Venting on Facebook is worse, because it is likely to be seen by people with a connection to your real life. What’s said on the Undead Thread stays on the Undead Thread.

I prefer venting on FR. I know far too many people on Facebook, mostly family members and a few old school pals, but most people who aren’t related know only that I post uplifting memes, I’m the parents of some people and dowager auntie to lots and LOTS of others.

So far, in all my years of being on Facebook, not too many people know that my diet consists of anything but chocolate and coffee. They know I have an incurable disease that limits the quality of my life but only my FS is in denial about it. The rest of them just hang out and love me.

On FR, y’all know all about me and don’t seem to care at all! 💖

This is the best place.

Venting on Facebook is THE worst.

HERE you can vent without suffering the ensuing calumnies of leftist dolts who happen to take issue with every last political-sounding element of your tirade.

HERE you can freely rail against even close family members with little to no fear of discovery and all the thorny repercussions that might entail.

HERE you have a long history with people who already know enough of the backstory that your rant will be pretty well understood, that you’ll garner the empathy the situation deserves, and probably get plenty of affirming feedback including personal anecdotes that pertain more or less directly to situations similar to what provoked your post.

Try ANY of that on Facebook and I can’t project that the results would work out in any way that negatives wouldn’t substantially outweigh positives. I suppose a few perfect strangers could see it and chime in with, “GOD I’m SO glad you said that; it’s been ticking me off for months and SOMEBODY had to finally ...” but they’d be stand-out exceptions.

MOSTLY, though, you’d likely have to endure months of toxic relational radioactivity from friends and family who don’t know the whole story, and likely won’t (or can’t) see things your way, AND will not refrain from telling you so; likely with all the edge and spiciness that posting on the internet unleashes.

So, vent on Facebook?

No.

Just...don’t.

You’re right, HK, as you always are, about such things, and everything you’ve listed is exactly why I don’t and won’t vent on Facebook. My job on Facebook is to post uplifting or funny memes and make appropriate comments when people have meltdowns. Even if they ask advice, I will only offer suggestions.

My old school friends probably know me the best, and they do the same thing — not telling!!

I don’t really like to rail against my family members but the thing is, if I didn’t love them so much, they wouldn’t have the power to hurt me. So they hurt me and my life is miserable enough since I got here, and some days, I just have to tell someone. T-c is the one who gets the brunt of it, so bless you, T-c!

Anyway, thanks for listening and for providing the love and support I so dearly need!

That's right! Letting off some steam is very important, from time to time... stuff eats you up inside if you don't do it enough!
