I just don’t feel sorry for people that have enough money getting by receiving expensive benefits they don’t need in retirement.

If you aren’t serious about limiting the payola, then you aren’t serious about reducing government spending.

It’s the ol Grandpa simpson mentality, and that needs to change badly. Cut the handouts, even if you think you ‘paid in’!!!

It’s not a matter of thinking you “paid in”. Your attitude is infuriating. I can run my total amount withheld on the Social Security site. I can assure you it is far from money “I think I put in”. Additionally, my regular tax burden over the years has been very high.

You seem to want a system that rapes net taxpayers twice, that happen to also be able to put money aside with what is left after all the “thinking I paid in”.

I'm just saying that once we give the government the ability to decide who "needs it" and who doesn't, it will end up that most of us will end up with nothing.

Also, let's clarify what you mean by "people that have enough money". That is also a dangerous slippy slope. How much money to you think is "enough."

If somebody had a million dollars in their 401k, would you say that they "had enough money" and thus don't need Social Security?

What is that number?

well I agree about limiting the payola schemes....

however infact we DID indeed pay in....for me, it was well over 40 yrs...husband the same....

I worked at nonprofit hospitals without defined pensions so SS is IT for me...that and whatever I saved....

I feel the same way about banking/checking accounts. Why can't people without money in their account write checks, when plenty of people have money just setting in their accounts doing nothing?

So people that don't need SS benefits at retirement have plenty of money. If they can self-support themselves through retirement, why are they paying into SS in the first place? Why not let rich people opt out of the program entirely, and then you don't have to worry about means-testing beneficiaries?
