A sheriff in southern Illinois has said the state's ban on the sale and possession of semiautomatic weapons, which was signed into law on Tuesday by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, is unconstitutional and that he won't enforce the ban.
Edwards County Sheriff Darby Boewe posted a letter on the sheriff's department Facebook page that states, "Part of my duties that I accepted upon being sworn into office was to protect the rights to all of us in the Constitution. One of those rights enumerated is the right of the people to keep and bear arms provided under the Second Amendment."
Boewe wrote he believes the legislation, which also limits the size of magazines for rifles and handguns, is a "clear violation" of the Second Amendment.

The libs on NextDoor all have their panties bunched tightly over this. They just can’t conceive that no sheriff, nor any other law enforcement officer can support a law that is on the face unconstitutional. And they riot of it is they are demanding they amend the constitution, like, tomorrow.
This is certainly providing me with much entertainment along with my cups of coffee this a.m.
Demand that the politicians get off their asses and go out and confiscate the guns belonging to the American people. Law Enforcement Officers should not have to risk their lives for the Bolshies’ political stunts.
Quite a few Sheriffs have published that same letter, including many in Northern Illinois, and many are Democrats.
This sheriff will never have to stand before a higher authority and offer the excuse he was “just following orders.”
Pass more laws while crowing about defunding police and ‘justice equity’ which results in fewer resources to incarcerate/punish law breakers.

Smith was convicted of providing concealed carry weapons permits in exchange for political donations or other favors.
Any criminal could buy a CCW permit, NO law abiding average Citizen could get one, ever.

There are over 70 Illinois County Sheriffs who are refusing the new “law”.
Sheriffs in California said the same thing back in 1989 when Cali made such rifles illegal. How is that working out for them now!

Your comment is basically true, however there is a great deal of Historical and background information that one must be aware of before your comment should be discussed.
California is a severely fractured state and there is VERY significant differences in the operations of Law Enforcement and Courts between Urban-Suburban Counties and Rural Counties.
This has been going on since the Railroad Wars and the Water Wars of early California statehood, when County Sheriffs picked a side, armed and swore Deputies and shot it out against or alongside Pinkerton and Railroad "Police".
Timeline wise, California has never been more divided than now, and California State Government has never been less responsive and Representative of the California Citizen than now.
How is that working out for them now!
The proper and truthful answer to that is:
It depends on WHERE in California they are.

I still remember how California got their AW ban passed. They proposed the law, then gun writer Neal Knox discovered it also banned some lever action rifles and he made it public.
The blow back was so bad that the lever action section was removed and the bill later shelved.
California released 7 time loser Pat Purdy from a mental institution, allowed him to buy a handgun, passing the waiting period, and an AK-47s in Oregon in violation of Federal law.
He then went and shot up the Stockton School yard killing several kids and himself.
The shelved bill was pulled out and passed so fast before opposition could be mounted against it.
He saying that his office is not above using this act to pile on charges if you are charged with something else.
It’s not just one Sheriff. It’s most of them.

Sadly, there are far too many sheriffs and other elected officials that have not yet heard of this thing called the Constitution.
