Idaho Murder Suspect Bryan Kohberger Has Preliminary Hearing Set for June

Bryan Kohberger appeared in court Thursday morning for a status conference, and his next court date, a preliminary hearing, was set for June 26.

The preliminary hearing, when both sides will have the chance to provide evidence and call witnesses to the stand, will last about five days and decide whether there is reasonable cause.

In court, Kohberger, 28, waived his right to a speedy probable cause hearing within 14 days.

A public defender, Anne Taylor, said that they needed time to review the details for the case.

The Washington State University criminology student is being charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary.

Victims Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were found stabbed to death in a townhouse in Moscow, Idaho, Nov. 13.

Kohberger is being held without bond at Latah County Jail after being arrested Dec. 30 in Albrightsville, Pa. Kohberger was extradited to Idaho Jan. 4.

Local law enforcement reviewed tapes of the neighborhood around the victims’ home after the murders, discovering that a white Hyundai Elantra circulated around the home of the victims at least three times on the day of the murders.

Police found a white Elantra was registered to Kohberger. One of the surviving roommates also told authorities Kohberger matched the description of the man she saw in their home that night.

Phone records placed Kohberger in Moscow at 4:48 a.m.

The murders are believed to have occurred around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13, according to authorities.

Authorities also found a knife sheath with DNA on it at the crime scene, and after they obtained DNA from the garbage outside Kohberger’s home, authorities concluded that the DNA was the father of the person whose DNA had been left on the knife sheath.

“they appear to have gotten top attack dog attorneys”

Then why is he being represented by a public defender?

He might find another lawyer soon. Might be one reason why they put the preliminary hearing off for six months. While there is a lot of evidence already revealed, a lot of it is shaky. The eyewitness and the delay in calling 911 is really odd.

The eyewitness and the delay in calling 911 is really odd.

There are always odd things revealed in a crime like this. Ordinary reality is a lot stranger than we usually imagine.

The killer's DNA was found at the scene. The victim's DNA traces were found on the killer's possession or in his car. There is no innocent explanation for this. Game, set, match.

He is guilty. Hang him on the front lawn of the municipal courtyard. Next month. Sell tickets and pay-per-view rights.

“ So much for speedy trials.”

He requested that right to be waived.

He needs longer to concoct a better story

Five months sounds like a long time to people not familiar with court systems, but to me it sounds fairly speedy, given that the defense waived the most rapid option. They want full discovery which is going to take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to assemble and then another 2-3 months is reasonable for the defense to study the material handed over. I don’t track this professionally but it seems to me that in busier court jurisdictions this could easily have dragged out to a year or even 18 months before the next stage. Unless there’s a guilty plea submitted there will very likely be another delay after the June hearing.

Does Idaho offer the option of no jury and trial by judge?

I would be looking for that if I were the defense attorney, there is basically zero chance of swaying a jury but a judge might be more open to any loophole arguments at least in terms of reduced sentence.

Personally, I am getting the vibes of a sort of dissociated personality type who genuinely cannot fully integrate the horror of the alt personality. Not that it would rise to the level of an insanity defense (which I gather is very restricted in Idaho). It might cause a judge to sentence to a psychiatric facility rather than max security jail.

Do you have a media source for that? I haven't seen that in the media.

Ever since Damher there’s been a pretty big reduction in ‘famous’ prisoner deaths. Chris Watts is still going. They move them around and keep them separated. I don’t like it, but they really protect these ones. The school shooters should especially be in general and unwatched.

That may very well be the case. I am getting a similar impression.

Disassociated personality is not, in my perspective, a legitimate defense for anything. In fact, it is an aggravating factor that warrants more serious disposition in cases of violent crimes.

We do not attempt to punish or rehabilitate rabid animals. We put them down. That is what we must do with people who commit certain types of violent crimes.

Such an interesting statement. It’s a very good insight. What the heck, human psychology. Staggers the mind.

I wouldn’t claim it as much of an insight, having studied psychology this guy’s entire known profile is a perfect match for dissociation. And after I posted this, another news story came out claiming to have found quotes from him, about ten years back, saying more or less that he had no emotional affect and felt nothing. The most frequently cited reason for development of this sort of personality is emotional or sexual abuse or trauma in early childhood. So I find it rather interesting that the father shows up to shepherd the guy home, possibly a family recognition of a troubled personality or any number of other possible reasons that could shed further light on this murky situation.

It’s not so much a defense as an explanation of something that is otherwise hard to explain. Of course there are a lot of people out there who are damaged and have a diagnosis, but will never snap to this extent or do anything to come to the attention of law enforcement.

I’ve read criticism that multiple personality disorders are being exaggerated in their frequency by means of over-enthusiastic psychologists suggestively leading patients into confirmations of what would have gone un-noticed a generation earlier. The incidence of such persona in the general population is thought to be around 1% but with a range of 0.1% to 2.5% being possible. That would mean 3.5 million Americans and obviously nowhere near that number reach this level. Even if it’s 350,000, same comment applies. Like autism there’s a spectrum of this sort of abnormal mental state, so a lot of people could have a mild case of it. The diagnosis becomes difficult because in mild cases, a lot of people have “different sides” or see themselves as a composite of identities but the clinical diagnosis depends on a dysfunctional outcome of which one of the more salient examples is a lack of memory of all aspects of the multiple personae so that acts as well as thoughts can go unrecalled or at least suppressed. It’s seen to be a coping mechanism for severe abuse.

Interesting also that autism and this range of multiple personality disorders have some common features and common postulated causes. But they are not very similar in some of their symptoms. For example, autistic people often have problems with vocabulary, this is not seen to be a problem for multiple personality types. Also there’s a difference in socialization skills. What is similar perhaps is a tendency to self-harm and withdrawal.

Get a load of this. The FBI lost the perp for a few hours...

Idaho murders suspect 'vanished' for several hours under police surveillance Bryan Kohberger was followed from Washington to Pennsylvania after becoming a person of interest in the murder of four University of Idaho students.

And note that the UK paper used a headline that suggests it was the fuzz, not the Feebs, doing the losing.

It’s unbelievable that happened. They were lucky to find him. Plus, it makes no sense that Brian’s attorney was a lawyer to Maddie’s parents and Xana’s mother.

It may not have been luck.

I’m wondering if the Feebs lost him on purpose for some reason.
