One of the first methods of converting an AR to fire full auto is to install a part known as a Drop-In Auto Sear, or DIAS. The DIAS requires an M-16 hammer, selector, and bolt installed in the rifle.

Back in ‘69 in BCT we qualified on both the M-14 and the M-16. On one occasion at the range they let us put the M-16 on automatic...can’t recall if it was for a full clip or only for a couple of seconds. God that was fun for me,a 19 year old boy from the suburbs of Boston!
Years ago the US Ambassador to Yemen was the father of a girl in my 6th grade class. He came to ‘bring dad to class day’ and had a really interesting slide show and discussion. This was back in the days of the Kingdom if Yemen. He had spent four tours in Yemen beginning in 1948 when he was part of the first full ambassadorial mission to San’a. When he spoke to us (1958), he was the DOS Yemen, South arabia-Hardramaut guy. Didn’t talk down to us (that was DC at the height of the Cold War, there were kids in my class who had been with their parents to more overseas missions than this guy) thought that the speed of ‘political development’ in the Arab world was going to create big problems for Yemeni monarchy as the Soviets were egging Nasser to try to destabilize the whole south end of the Arabian Peninsula. Wow, so long ago, everything seemed so clear back then.
