China now publishes more high-quality science than any other nation – should the US be worried?

By at least one measure, China now leads the world in producing high-quality science. My research shows that Chinese scholars now publish a larger fraction of the top 1% most cited scientific papers globally than scientists from any other country.

I am a policy expert and analyst who studies how governmental investment in science, technology and innovation improves social welfare. While a country’s scientific prowess is somewhat difficult to quantify, I’d argue that the amount of money spent on scientific research, the number of scholarly papers published and the quality of those papers are good stand-in measures.

China is not the only nation to drastically improve its science capacity in recent years, but China’s rise has been particularly dramatic. This has left U.S. policy experts and government officials worried about how China’s scientific supremacy will shift the global balance of power. China’s recent ascendancy results from years of governmental policy aiming to be tops in science and technology. The country has taken explicit steps to get where it is today, and the U.S. now has a choice to make about how to respond to a scientifically competitive China.

...

Since 2000, China has sent an estimated 5.2 million students and scholars to study abroad. The majority of them studied science or engineering. Many of these students remained where they studied, but an increasing number return to China to work in well-resourced laboratories and high-tech companies.

US STEM supremacy after WW II was the result of large numbers of Central European immigrants, as well as their first-generation offspring raised in immigrant communities that preserved their cultural values of discipline, character, and achievement.

When Europe recovered in the latter part of the last century, these flows were replaced by East and South Asian immigrants with similar values.

As US xenophobia cuts off these flows and encourages them to migrate back to Asia, we will become largely dependent on US students raised in the US cultural environment.

Hedonistic libertines do not make good scientists and engineers.

Well yeah. They stole the technology fair and square. Thank Loral and Slick Willy for some of that

You can't engage in science if you insist there is no such thing as biological sex, that differences among racial and ethnic groups don't exist, and that genetics aren't real.

America is losing because it's political orthodoxy makes conducting scientific research impossible. Nobody is going to take your research seriously when your institutions claim men can become pregnant.

A false premise, comparing science in China to what has devolved into “political science” in the U.S. ... sad to say ... particularly in the medical industry.

There. Fixed it.

Of course not, they have slanty eyes there and therefore are inferior to us.

It all starts with Bill Clinton giving all our rocket data including the computers to China because he needed money for his reelection to his second term. Dems have been giving our science to China since Clinton.

As US xenophobia

xenophobia of europeans? The truth is more likely that China is just republishing science stolen from the US and European countries

But not to worry, those millions of central American farmers streaming over our borders will surely bring us up to speed

Chinese are reverse engineering, low creativity Borg.

Japs are a better technology people.

Krauts and Russians are good engineers.

The US establishment threw serious scientific research away years ago. Some still goes on here, but that bucks the trend. Some freedom still exists due to inertia.

Yes, China has political enforcement if a scientist openly denounces the regime. But no witch hunts, no cultural revolution.

“China now publishes more high-quality science than any other nation – should the US be worried?”

It should also be noted that many, if not most, of the technical papers include Chinese authors, and while they may be American, they may not be and given their non-Americanized first names, I tend to think most are not US citizens.

The point being that people of European descent are NO LONGER leading the research going on the world, as they tend to other matter. Really sad to see us crumbling this way.

By the way, my son made varsity football last week!

If that’s what you think, I don’t think you’re really up on what’s going on. Universities find it easier and more profitable to take in graduate students from China who are going back to China than they are to raise up home-grown talent of whatever ethnicity.

And that Bill Kristol idea that the native-born are worthless and the country going to be saved by imported foreigners is not only insulting to people who are born here, but also not likely to work.

No worry needed. Action is required. Revoke the visas of every ChiCom at American universities. Don’t let the ChiComs learn, steal and run.
