Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the city of Bakhmut, in the eastern Donbas region, is holding its own despite widespread Russian destruction in the area.
“Bakhmut is holding out against all odds,” Zelensky said in his address Sunday. “And although most of the city is destroyed by Russian strikes, our warriors repel constant attempts at Russian offensive there.”
Reuters reported that Ukrainian officials said they sent reinforcements to Soledar, a small town near Bakhmut, to repel attacks from the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Zelensky said in his address that the situation in Soledar is “extremely hard,” as the town faced even more destruction than neighboring Bakhmut.
“There is no such piece of land near these two cities, where the occupier would not have given his life for the crazy ideas of the masters of the Russian regime,” he said in the address. “This is one of the bloodiest places on the frontline.”
Zelensky said that Ukrainian Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi visited the troops near the two cities to commend them for their resilience and to organize the strengthening of Ukraine’s defense, including transferring additional units to the area.

Or, “We really need about 80 billion more dollars…”
Bakmut is the next Marioupol, only more. The 125 miles of underground salt mines is similar to the Avostal plant where many documented Neo Nazis were holding out underground, same, same…MANY tattooed Ukie Neo Nazis were captured, how many this time?
With Soledar and Bakmut lost, the Ukies ( Nazis) Eastern Front goes Kaput.
Much similarity with Nazi’s hold at all costs Stalingrad campaign.
Oh, I'm sure it will happen - but to guarantee the product fits the Hollywood viewpoint, they'll probably rent Marty Feldman's corpse to play Putin.
;^)
“Fallout going into Poland would trigger a NATO response and it would be nuclear.”
Ludicrous nonsense, bereft of any knowledge/experience with US Ops Plans.
I contend Ukraine is a natural part of the Russian sphere of Influence and they will use such force as necessary to protect that.
And they have the power to make it so.
The novices in US Govt and novices on Free Republic don’t seem to take that reality clearly.
Yes, Russia will fight existential war over Ukraine.
“But some here wold love to see the Russian take Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland, the Baltics, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and reestablish a modern version of the USSR. And then take old East Germany.”
Laughable.
Name one.
But this can’t be true, the Ukrainians are kicking the Russians butts!
Why?
If putin uses nukes russia will be pulverized. He has been told this...
;>)
“russia will be pulverized”
By whom, exactly?
And how?
“For the life of me I cannot understand why Russia does not employ nukes.”
Russia can’t employ nukes because it would contaminate not only large parts of Europe but even large parts of Russia itself. The nuclear fallout would be drifting with the winds all over the place.
Also, the main war zones are in the 4 Eastern Ukrainian regions Russia has officially annexed. According to the Kremlin those 4 regions are Russian now.
So it would be a political suicide for the Kremlin if it attacked its own Russian territory with nuclear weapons.
Using nukes would also show that Russias conventional army is incapable of fighting against a few Ukrainian defenders. Russia would look spectacularly weak.
Russia in imperialistic but it’s not masochistic.
No. I think it would be even worse. I think the allies that they have would immediately distance themselves from Russia. Potentially even the most radical.
That is a very strong endorsement of Russian aggression and its introduction of nuclear warfare to modern military operations as normal.
I hope Russia is saner than you are and doesn’t start using nuclear weapons in European conquests.
Bakhmut has huge underground salt mines that could house a half a million men, an underground city with hospitals, armories, etc... It is like a Maginot Line and has been fortified for years! Even a nuke couldn’t take it out. It will never fall. Its not worth the propaganda value to win this prize. Its like Verdun. Bi-pass this death trap. Russian couldn’t take it in a century. They have enough food stored there and men, it will not fall. Even China with all her Millions, could not take this Gibraltar.
“That is a very strong endorsement of Russian aggression and its introduction of nuclear warfare to modern military operations as normal.”
Imagine if you will...
China makes a strategic military alliance of all South America. And they all have good tech, money and nukes.
And that alliance then starts conducting military drills with Canada and putting forth formal political positions that Canada will join their alliance against the US.
The US would most certainly, indisputably use their full national power...inclusive of nukes...to prevent that from happening.
Would that Southern Alliance risk incineration to incorporate Canada into their sphere of influence and markets...and military alliance?
Highly unlikely.
5 Kiloton tactical nukes won’t contaminate much of anything for long.
Chernobyl released at least 1,000X that amount.
Red herring.
That is so silly.
Europe, world wars, Russia, NATO, Western Civilization, Ukraine, nuclear countries, are real, and Russia is again on the move.
I hope Russia isn’t as insane as you are and start a nuclear war because one of their invasions is going badly.
Anyway.
If Russia has to use nukes trying to score a few points against Ukraine. Politically it would make Russia look very weak. The world’s second army incapable of wining “mano to mano” against a few Ukrainians. It would prove to the world Russias conventional army is a failure. And that in turn would result in the beginning of the dislocation of the Russian federation. As we all know there are many Russian regions in its federation wanting to break away, becoming their own country.
They are just waiting for the Kremlin system to become sufficiently weakened.
“Europe, world wars, Russia, NATO, Western Civilization, Ukraine, nuclear countries, are real, and Russia is again on the move.”
I’m sure you know what you meant with that jumbled collection of words. But to everyone else it’s incomprehensible.
