Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the city of Bakhmut, in the eastern Donbas region, is holding its own despite widespread Russian destruction in the area.
“Bakhmut is holding out against all odds,” Zelensky said in his address Sunday. “And although most of the city is destroyed by Russian strikes, our warriors repel constant attempts at Russian offensive there.”
Reuters reported that Ukrainian officials said they sent reinforcements to Soledar, a small town near Bakhmut, to repel attacks from the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Zelensky said in his address that the situation in Soledar is “extremely hard,” as the town faced even more destruction than neighboring Bakhmut.
“There is no such piece of land near these two cities, where the occupier would not have given his life for the crazy ideas of the masters of the Russian regime,” he said in the address. “This is one of the bloodiest places on the frontline.”
Zelensky said that Ukrainian Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi visited the troops near the two cities to commend them for their resilience and to organize the strengthening of Ukraine’s defense, including transferring additional units to the area.

Russia is winning in Bakhmut.
For the life of me I cannot understand why Russia does not employ nukes.
Bakmut and Mariupol are both examples of where tactical nukes would have saved at east 10,000 of their own men.
At least 10,000.
I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t created epic war hero movies staring George Clooney as Zelensky and either Danny Trejo or Danny DeVito as Putin.

Starting to use even tactical nukes leads to things like contaminated farmland and wind blowing radiation all over Europe. They would be an immediate pariah.
This was a war that Russia needed to win quickly, prolonged conflict here will not favor them and will lead to more desperate options. Pulling the cork on the Nuclear genie bottle probably a bad idea.

You are under the mistaken belief that the west would respond to Russia’s use of tactical nukes...with nukes.
Or other strategic strikes on mainland Russia.

Mostly though, they do not posess the capability to strategically use the tactical nuclear weapons. The Russian Officer corps is withered to ineffectiveness. No one knows how to get the nucs out of storage and then actually move them effectively to a point where tey can be used.

You like the idea of Russia introducing nukes to the world as just another weapon when invading weaker countries, or any country they decide to invade, making nukes routine?
Fallout going into Poland would trigger a NATO response and it would be nuclear.
Ukraine has strategic value to the world and to the West. But some here wold love to see the Russian take Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland, the Baltics, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and reestablish a modern version of the USSR. And then take old East Germany.
Don’t they say in modern warfare there is no need for tactical nukes. Modern conventional weapons do the same thing better.
Then we would give the Uke’s nukes, and the s**t would hit the fan.

“Holding out against all odds” translates to “we’re about done here” in real-speak.
Maybe, but these are (were) mostly Russia supporters in these places, and they have declared Donbas their own territory. They simply want to bring these places back to Russia, and away from Azov/Nazi West Ukraine and NATO
It would be like Biden using nukes on Texas when they form a military alliance with Mexico and China.
