The warning Southern California Gas Co. issued to its customers was unusually blunt: “There’s no easy way to put this,” the company said. “January bills are likely to be shockingly high.”
Anyone who heats their home with natural gas is likely to see a January bill that is more than double what they paid a year earlier, SoCalGas said.
A typical peak monthly bill of $65 from last winter will probably come in close to $160, SoCalGas said, a 146% increase. A $130 bill will be more like $315, up 142%.
The increases result from the soaring wholesale price of natural gas paid by SoCalGas and passed through to its customers. That price, set by national and regional markets, rose 2 1/2 times over December’s price, and is up more than 300% from January 2022, according to SoCalGas.

When Vlad can’t sell his gas, you get to make your own gas.
Europeans are sucking up US natural gas and not Russian natural gas.
Obvious solution is to raise taxes on eeeeeeevil oil and gas companies.
Nice of the gas company to let me know the day before my bill came. Maybe if I had known I could have made some adjustments in usage. Rates were up 50% on my bill verses last month. Rates had been going up 5% a month all year so yes they probably have doubled in the last year. Nice to be a quasi government monopoly. If you want more money you just take it. You never have to worry about a more efficient competitor taking your customers.
California sits on top of pretty large oil and natural gas fields.
So, screw’em.
Who is pocketing the increase? That is what needs to be known..
The president, the man who stole the election, is shutting down the gas company suppliers. So the price goes up.
Its almost as if our president works for China.
Meanwhile the Public Utility Commission of Ohio has listed my local non-contract price
Customers who have not actively chosen a natural gas supplier receive their natural gas supply at the SCO rate from one of four suppliers: Constellation New Energy-Gas Division, DTE Gas Supply, Southstar d/b/a Ohio Natural Gas, or Spire Marketing, IncFor comparison, 1 CCF is equal to 1.037 therms.CenterPoint's SCO rate is $0.61086 per ccf - Effective January 1, 2023 through January 31, 2023
CenterPoint's SCO rate was $0.82518 per ccf - Effective December 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022
The day biden was elected I was paying $00.80 therm with all tax/charges included.
Today I’m paying $3.00 per therm all taxes/charges included.
FU biden, burn in hell.
Gas is under $4. Not sure why their rates are still climbing.
“California sits on top of pretty large oil and natural gas fields.” True. Enough oil and natural gas in California for the entire USA for 200 years, easily.
The article link below blames everything but the democrats blocking oil and gas drilling and pipelines.
California blocks new drilling and Los Angeles recently voted to shutdown the hundreds of oil wells in the county.
Electricity which is produced at .6 cents as an example by the Diablo nuclear plant which the democrats ordered shutdown in 2025 thru 2030 was last fall told it could stay open for now as rolling blackouts were a big possibility.
Meanwhile the democrats force the producers to charge .20 to .30 a kw in most of the state to subsidize solar and wind which cannot compete.
I bet the price won’t come down anytime soon. The democrats have banned new natural gas hookups in much of the state. Plus no portable gas generators will be allowed.
They want you to use expensive electricity. The rolling blackouts should be a warning but it only encourages the democrats as they want the peasants sitting in the dark either cold or hot depending on the season.
California has more oil and gas then most nations yet blocks it from being used. They instead import 90% of the gas from other states......!
Kinda like having a electric car and saying you are “green” when the power comes from a power plant burning gas or coal or using nuclear.
Natural gas bills to jump ‘shockingly high’ across region, SoCalGas warns
https://www.ocregister.com/2023/01/06/your-natural-gas-bills-to-jump-shockingly-high-across-region-socalgas-warns/
SoCalGas rates are expected to more than double over the cost of last winter. If a customer’s natural gas bill totaled $130 last winter, for example, that household can expect a $315 bill this winter, according to the gas company. And the average Long Beach single-family residential customer should prepare for an increase of $200 or more on their bill, that city’s utility said.
Do with less sayeth the democrats while the party elite never do:
“Both companies advised natural gas users to lower their thermostats three to five degrees — which can result in up to a 10% reduction in heating costs. Washing clothes in cold water, limiting hot showers, turning down the temperature on your water heater...”
democrat voters getting more of what they voted for.
