UPDATE posted around 12:36 am EST:
Kevin McCarthy won the House speakership during the 15th round of voting this week which began late Friday night and spilled over into Saturday after the clock struck midnight. He earned 216 votes.
Andy Biggs of Arizona, Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, and Matt Rosendale of Montana, who had previously voted against McCarthy in the first 14 rounds, each voted present in the 15th round, which lowered the threshold McCarthy needed to secure victory — Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Matt Gaetz of Florida, who had switched to present in the 14th vote, voted present again for the 15th round.
Original story below:
For the 14th time this week, Kevin McCarthy has come up short in his quest to clinch the House speakership.
He came closer than he had all week by earning 216 votes — he would have locked up a win if he had been able to reach 217.
Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Matt Gaetz of Florida, who had previously voted against McCarthy in the first 13 rounds, voted present during the 14th vote.
Andy Biggs of Arizona, Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Matt Rosendale of Montana, who had all voted against McCarthy on the first 13 rounds, voted against him again in the 14th round.
A group of more than a dozen Republicans voted against McCarthy in 11 votes this week, including three votes on Tuesday, three on Wednesday, and five on Thursday. Nineteen Republicans opposed McCarthy in the first two votes, but that number increased to 20 when Byron Donalds of Florida, who had voted for McCarthy twice, switched and voted against McCarthy on the third vote.

I’m confused.. voting ‘present’ doesn’t lower the threshold for majority - it simply denies anyone running the vote. The only way 216 wins a majority is if at least four Reps weren’t present at all (so out of 431), not that a couple of them vote present.
Lotsa truth printed here!

It does and it just did.
Lol. Let’s see. 6 members voting for Winnie the Pooh or anyone else means that Kevin needs 218 to win
Same 6 members voting present now Kevin can win with 216 instead of 218
Yup sounds like a lowered threshold to me.
The rule is that you need a majority of members PRESENT AND VOTING !
When a member votes “present” it just lowers the threshold needed to achieve a majority of votes from members PRESENT and VOTING.
Now the BIGGER question any SINGLE member can call for a vote to “VACATE the CHAIR”.
A majority of those PRESENT and VOTING will then need to elect a new Speaker of the house. Assuming nobody votes “PRESENT” the threshold becomes 218 again.

The rule is PRESENT and VOTING - voting Present is choosing to NOT participate in the VOTE but documenting the fact that you are present and OBSERVING
