Former Michigan Rep. Justin Amash is offering to serve as Speaker of the House in the event that Republicans and Democrats can not elect a sitting member to lead the lower chamber.
“I’m here because I think this process is really uncertain where it goes. And I think I provide a good alternative to a lot of the options being discussed,” Amash told reporters at the Capitol. “I’m just here at this point because this is interesting, this is exciting in many ways. I think it’s a positive thing for representative government that we have a disagreement on the floor.” (RELATED: Speaker Vote Heads To Second Ballot For First Time In 100 Years)
Amash, a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus who served in Congress from 2011-21, left the GOP to become an independent in 2019. He later joined the Libertarian Party, unsuccessfully seeking its presidential nomination in 2020. The Speaker of the House is not constitutionally required to be a member of the body, although no non-representative has ever held the position before.
“The problem is ultimately, do you trust the leadership? Because rules are suspended, rules are delayed, so what matters is, do you trust the person in charge?” Amash continued. “These 20 members or so do not trust Kevin McCarthy. I think that’s the bottom line. I don’t think it matters from their perspective precisely what’s in the rules package. They don’t trust the man. And that’s a reasonable concern.”
McCarthy has failed to ascend to the gavel after five Speaker votes. Nineteen Republicans voted against him on the first two ballots, 20 voted against him on the third, fourth, and fifth ballots. Indiana Rep. Victoria Spartz voted “present” on the fourth and fifth ballots.

The fact that he's backing McCarthy tells me all I need to know on that issue.
God, I hope not. Trump never should have gotten involved in this, unless his ulterior motive all along has been to cancel McCarthy once and for all.
People don’t like him but he is an advocate of smaller government.
********
It’s easy to be an advocate for smaller government when hardly anybody else is.
I would love smaller government but since 1960, the Federal Budget has turned into a spending behemoth regardless of political parties, voters, commissions, etc.
Now back to the Republican turned libertarian independent craphead Amash.
This ‘loser and sucker’ voted to impeach Trump in the 1st impeachment farce on two articles which are laughable:
1) Abuse of Power(Oh Noes, the phrasing is so vague & scary)
2) Obstructing Congress ( Really? Trump should be rewarded for whatever problems he caused these useless hypocrites)
Bwahahaha! Corrupt, Left-wing turncoat volunteers to also help relieve Elon Musk of half a trillion dollars, too! And if pressed, he’ll go out with Black Widow, too.
“People don’t like him but he is an advocate of smaller government.”
Not hard to do. If you are for a $1.6 trillion spending bill, you are an advocate for smaller government with this bunch.
Move aside jeffries...
He was speaking to the democrats right?
dunno, but, here is how he would look
The other idiot Fred Upton also offered himself as speaker today. Lol
That's exactly where we are now. Narrow your focus on R's (both RINOs and Patriots). There are just two candidates. McC and Jordon. Now, McC and and Donalds.
bttt
I c what you did. Lol
No, there are three actively receiving votes. At what point should the #3 contender receiving fewer votes than the first and second-place vote-getters be eliminated?
Never, because what you advocate guarantees a Uniparty win.
Never!
A small newspaper in NYC today called the 20 far-right congressmen Trump supporters.
No people don’t like him because he is rat pretender. We in Michigan know what treasonous scumbag Justin Amash is.
Yup. In the case of Israel he even takes it one step further and is an advocate of NO government, hoping the country gets wiped off the map by his pals in HAMAS.
But he holds that position for "constitutional" reasons, of course.
Just what we need, a Chinese businessman as Speaker. 😄
They probably are. They just don't follow him lock-step, and like the majority of Trump supporters, don't agree with him on McCarthy as a choice for speaker. As far as I know Trump still hasn't explained in detail why he supports McCarthy. And I'd like to know what kind of deal was struck between Trump and McCarthy to get his backing. We haven't been told that either.
My new Congressman, Republican Brandon Williams says he is behind McCarthy all the way. I think his decision is based on the fact that he got money from McCarthy for his House run, and gives McCarthy credit for the House majority. He said: “He orchestrated our victory, however narrow, and deserves to be speaker.” Now we all know that's a bunch of hooey. If McCarthy was so effective, why was the majority so slim? It's also been reported that McCarthy gave money to anti-Trump people. Take back the House, which McCarthy is associated with gave money to Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. "Reps. Jaime Herrera Beutler (Wash.), John Katko (N.Y.), Peter Meijer (Mich.), David Valadao (Calif.) and Fred Upton (Mich.) during the first six months of 2021, according to the latest Federal Election Commission filings. Each lawmaker received roughly $100,000.
I tried calling Williams' office today, but his Washington office went to voicemail, and the mailbox was full. There were no contact numbers for his other two offices listed on his government page. That could be because he hasn't even been sworn in yet...but I will be calling him back.
