McCarthy loses sixth vote for speaker as House remains deadlocked

WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.

With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.

During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.

"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.

But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.

Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."

"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

“Well, it’s Groundhog Day,” said Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., in nominating McCarthy on the sixth ballot.

Without Andie MacDowell it doesn’t seem the same. Guess Pelosi will have to do.

Sadly, the Senate is way swampier than the House. In comparison to McConnell, McCarthy is almost MAGA. But there are better candidates than McCarthy, and we should pursue them as much as is possible if we have the opportunity.

There is an outside possibility that this is more coordinated than it seems. Don’t get me wrong. I consider it unlikely. But it’s possible this whole thing is being orchestrated to get Trump into the Speaker’s position - at least temporarily. In order for that to work, Trump would have to appear to not want it, and he would have to appear to support McCarthy. Why? Because if we reach a protracted stalemate, he may be the only person in a position to get both GOP factions to agree on someone. If he were perceived as being the cause of the stalemate, or contributing to it, then that would never happen.

On that thread that was pulled there was a comment that holdouts wanted balanced budget, border security and term limits. If thats true, it’s disappointing there are not more holdouts. I am pissed at the f’in clowns still backing Mccarthy.

'Of all the issues the far right conservatives brought up, the big stickler seems to be putting one of them on each important committee. This would, according to those for McCarthy, gum up the works too much.

It’s such a big stickler that it was mentioned in only one of the four newspapers I read today...that one paper didn’t suggest letting them have it in an opinion piece.

Wouldn’t that be something that FR would like? A far right congressman on each important committee and McCarthy for speaker? And this whole thing over with?"

This is not the problem.

Chairmen of the House Judiciary: Rep. Jim Jordan (OH)

Chairmen of the House Oversight : Rep. James Comer (KY)

Chairmen of the House Financial Services Committee: Rep. Patrick McHenry (NC)

Chairmen of Transportation: Rep. Samuel Graves (MO) or possibly Rep. Pete Stauber, depending on Rep. Mike Rogers (AL), keeping Armed Services or going back to head up Homeland.

band of 20 ultraconservative rebels

There isn’t a single thing that is being asked for which is ultra conservative. Not so long ago, Democrats wanted the same thing. Perhaps most of the GOP is so far left than once moderate things are now considered ‘ultra’.

Perhaps it’s no surprise at all that Trump’s exhortations carry no weight on this issue

The real question to all Freepers is ...

are you willing to replace “might be” with “is” in your assessment of Rep. Hakeem Jeffries vs. Rep. Kevin McCarthy?

If only Frank Ballenger was present on Golgotha hill during the first Good Friday so he could whisper that devil’s homily of hopelessness in the ears of Jesus, Mary, John and the thief who believed.

Taiwan and S. Korea are even more free. Their Parliament members regularly slug it out, throwing chairs and other objects if necessary.
