GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to secure victory in his long-running quest to become Speaker of the House in the first round Tuesday afternoon, a setback for both McCarthy and House Republicans who have an uphill battle to prove Republican leadership can govern with a narrow majority following last November's midterm elections.
The selection of House Speaker is generally a procedural step in a new majority's work to take control of the lower chamber, but Republicans in the House have had a rough go of it between the midterm elections and Tuesday's vote. GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to lock up enough votes to cruise to easy election as Speaker of the House, and the intervening period saw Republicans going after each other as much, if not more, than Democrats.

Reminds me of P.J. O’Rourke’s quote, “Republicans are the party that says ‘Government doesn’t work’, then they get elected and prove it.”
You bet me that McCarthy would win on 1st vote.
He lost 1st and has already lost 2nd.
When are u going to pay up?
Yep. Never forget his Cheney support
That’s a great one.
I miss P.J.’s wit and wisdom.
McCarthy just lost the second ballot as well.
My previous Congressidiot was known for his great Twitter handle (CallmeDutch) and for nothing else.
He claimed to be a strong independent mind yet voted as a Pelosi stooge 99% of the time
OK, is there anyone, ANYONE at all, that conservatives can rally around and actually like as the next Speaker?
Lost 2nd vote. Oh my.
LOL! P.J. O’Rourke was one smart man...possibly the second Will Rogers when it came to political quips.
I've pointed that out on several of these threads. He was against removing her from her leadership position, and defended her. He only changed his mind when he realized how much opposition there was against her.
I’m predicting McCarthy will eventually become Speaker but with some rule changes that he could not stomach, like a 2/3 vote being necessary for appropriations.
There is no such animal as a humble politician.
“Yep. Never forget his Cheney support”
Maybe you did forget something??

Kevin McCarthy Backs Liz Cheney’s Challenger, Escalating a Party Feud
The top House Republican’s unusual intervention in a primary marked the party’s latest move against Ms. Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of Donald J. Trump.
That’s nauseating. At least with the likes of Fat Ted and Gray Beaver, they didn’t misrepresent themselves.
I’d rather be stabbed in the chest by someone I know is an enemy, than stabbed in the back by someone who I thought was an ally.
Here is an idea that will make the World shake: Nominate Trump as the first Non member Speaker of the House.
Another one (quoting from memory, a comment he made on Crossfire):
"Liberalism is immoral... because you can't get into heaven by taking your neighbor's bank account and giving it to the poor."
Any microscopic amount of trust left between the GOP base and leadership evaporated during his sell out over the budget before the new congress.
Frankly McCarthy has a fatal combination of hubris with low situational awareness to be an Speaker, he should have known this would happen and he needs to withdraw immediately.
But I suspect McCarthy is now working behind the scenes to arrive at some sort of power sharing arrangement with the Democrats, and they will most like adjourn today without a speaker.
Apparently something similar happened during the run up to the Civil War, and the Congress voted to change the rules to allow the simple majority of all votes cast to elect a Speaker, and I would not put it past McCarthy to try something like this.
Maybe YOU ARE, though…
GOP establishment leader Kevin McCarthy plotted with Liz Cheney to force President Trump out of office by convincing him to resign. The conversation was captured in audio that was later leaked to reporters from The New York Times, and now resurfaces as McCarthy faces massive conservative resistance to his speakership campaign….
