The billionaire co-founder of Home Depot is slamming what he says is a poor work ethic among laborers today, claiming that “nobody gives a damn” about job performance in the present-day economy.
“'Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn,” Bernie Marcus told the Financial Times in an interview this week.
In a jeremiad against what he claimed were insufficiently motivated workers, Marcus mimicked them: "Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work - I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid."
The business tycoon claimed to the Times that his highly successful hardware chain would never realize the same level of growth and popularity in the modern economy.
“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.

“America needs to re-read ‘Atlas Shrugged’“.
It wouldn’t matter.
Half of America couldn’t even read, “Dick, Jane, and Sally”, much less an actual book.
Most of those who could get through it wouldn’t understand it, or would think Taggart and Rearden were the bad guys.
People who could understand the message already do.
“I think if the owner of Home Depot wants better workers he should pay more.”
He is the founder, not the owner. He retired 10 years ago. He’s merely commenting.
Um... he isn’t the owner.
Try to find anyone who speaks fluent English to fix your roof, or drain your septic tank, or cook your fancy restaurant meal, or mow your lawn, or build your retaining wall, or change the sheets in your hotel room
Maybe you should volunteer to pay them more for the stuff you buy there. If the item is $9 then you should pay them $15. Then they can pay their workers a “living wage” and you can feel better about yourself.
Be serious the average monthly salary for Vietnamese today is $150 a month. Back 40 years ago it was probably less than $50 a month. So $500 for a season was equivalent to close to a years income for a few months of work.
Boss could leverage the cost differential for his benefit, but from the labors perspective they were getting paid well.
Paying someone. $15 an hour ain’t going to get you the greatest effort employees… those that do work hard will find higher paying work and move on and you are left with folks who know this is just a job for them with no loyalty from their employee.
Even if you start motivated when you realize your paycheck ain’t getting you above sustenance existence you are going to move on or just do the minimum.
Human nature will not change.
Uh, if employers want their employees to work hard and show up, pay more. If not, stop bitching.
This is not complex.
“if employers want their employees to work hard and show up, pay more. If not, stop bitching.
“This is not complex.”
What the hell does that have anything to do with my post which only said that “he isn’t the owner”?
“Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn.”
_____________
You mean like those customers who buy “stuff” at Home Depot to fix, repair and build things??!!
Don’t believe everything that you read, just sayin’. Your comment is just not true. I know mid-level managers that are making mid-six figure earnings. Many end their careers millionaires.
Home Depot will reward hard work.
The rabble will always complain, and that’s also why we have Democrats in charge. They promise the world to the undeserving, so they vote Rat.
They could probably afford to pay more, but it will never be enough, no matter how much they pay.
I know 2 people that work for HD, and they make enough to do what everyone else does.
What I also have found is that much of how the customer is treated depends on the attitude with which the customer treats the store employee that is helping you. Saying so is more than just a hint, you fellow "customers."
Superciliousness has not worked well in those stores for me as a customer any more than it does here on FR exchanges of opinions and comments, or in my role as an employee of a company whose success I wish to augment.
Actually, in those big box stores I have found employees who love to see me coming, as one who will "step in their shoes" and treat them in a way that will validate the value of their presence as a customer's resource to a satisfying experience. Walmarts included. Dollar Tree also included.
I am serious and I was there so stick it, fella.
I’m not the guy complaining about the lack of workers.
Our home Depot is paying in the high teens around here.
Menards (a home Depot with more lumber) pays less. No idea what lowes pays they closed years ago.
454 heads are HEAVY !!!!!
Piffffft
Try 7.3 powerstroke or 3126/3116 cat heads
They can watch the movie.
Just the employee the government is looking for.
"Paying more" is not the issue. It is how one is treated with respect as a valuable component of a successful business that counts. A lot of this is the attitude instilled in the training of overseers for the allocation of tasks. Supervisors at every level invariably display the attitude of the business owner (the three-finger rule). The "pay" issue solves itself when (overall) the employee is respected even from the moment he/she is being interviewed for an opening.
If not, then you will see cumulative force will occur through unionization, which NEVER solves the "pay" issue. Democrats thrive on this fracturing of the employment scene, which always gets worse, not better.
