‘Too lazy, too fat, too stupid’: Home Depot founder slams workers in modern economy

The billionaire co-founder of Home Depot is slamming what he says is a poor work ethic among laborers today, claiming that “nobody gives a damn” about job performance in the present-day economy.

“'Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn,” Bernie Marcus told the Financial Times in an interview this week.

In a jeremiad against what he claimed were insufficiently motivated workers, Marcus mimicked them: "Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work - I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid."

The business tycoon claimed to the Times that his highly successful hardware chain would never realize the same level of growth and popularity in the modern economy.

“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.

almost all the major retailers are pro queer/trannies now.
June is a nightmare to navigate. Although I never noticed any rainbow flag crap at Walmart.

and did you ever notice when you are “working”, doing whatever you are getting paid for, the younger set has heartburn with you?
I’m a very hard worker and i don’t sit around at work.
Younger female staff had a problem with me, mostly because i did not stand around whining about my latest anxiety attack.

Certainly true for Americans, but I’ll put up the quality of my mostly-Mexican(or similar) built house against anything I’ve seen from the UAW, for example.

I'll have to concoct a more inappropriate comparison than the old "apples and oranges" chestnut for future analogies.

The lovely migrant laborers who eventually managed to build our last house used half of our brick to continuously rebuild the same damned mailbox over and over (with us having to continually dismantle it and re-stand our old cast iron box) and cut up a very expensive engineered glue-laminated horizontal around which half the house had been designed. We were told by the unapologetic white-trash who hired them that they "just did that", and that they had used the brick to also build mailboxes for others on that street of the development because that particular circus troupe had an old guy who just built mailboxes. They knew that the brick pallets delivered to our property were for use on our project, they just didn't care. They thought the glue-lam was perfect for making a picnic table and also some one-time use ladders, and they wanted to know where they could steal some more.

I wouldn't hire the only mexican to have an actual work ethic if he was the sole support for every orphan in mexico.

Yeah, that’s because you don’t own a business.

I have called bs on the “there are a lot of jobs out there”. I live in the Dallas area (McKinney). I am a young, retired Navy Commander with a BS from the US Naval Academy and an MBA. I have applied everywhere including the Home Depot. No one will hire me. I work part time in a brewery for $12 an hour right now.

“Try to find anyone who speaks fluent English to fix your roof, or drain your septic tank, or cook your fancy restaurant meal, or mow your lawn, or build your retaining wall, or change the sheets in your hotel room”

That’s my point. A FULL GENERATION of American kids have now learned that there’s no reason to do any real work. Ask yourself how many can do a brake job, versus 40 years ago, for example.

Since I was 15 I worked as a fry cook, a dishwasher, a landscaper, a stock clerk, a delivery driver, a janitor, a piano mover, a retail store manager, a piano rebuilder and technician, an arts craftsman, a guitar teacher, a bookstore clerk, a waiter, a singer, and a lawyer.

A lot of jobs I would have done for no pay, just to gain experience. Thankfully I got paid for all my endeavors.

These days kids don’t work till they get out of college and can’t figure out why no one wants to hire them.

“These days kids don’t work till they get out of college and can’t figure out why no one wants to hire them.”

20 years ago I suggested to my electrical contractor friend that he advertise to the ‘better’ people in high school and offer them $15/hour. 20 years ago, and no one would take him up for that much money...like you, I probably would have PAID the contractor $15/hour to learn that skill.

The one thing I regret in life is that I never learned to be a plumber.

America needs to re-read “Atlas Shrugged “.

Most Americans can't get past the first page.

Same. At no point since I was 15 have I been without a job.

I’m in a farm community now, and those guys are different. They lay huge sums on the line every spring and fall despite the uncertainties of weather, market, financing, etc.

They gut it out. No working wage promised. Most I know have modest homes and vehicles.

“Greedy employers do that with everyone.”

“In a jeremiad against what he claimed were insufficiently motivated workers”

Motivation is always destroyed with mistreatment. If you are going to bad mouth employees, then you don’t need them and you should get rid of them.

People take jobs for many different reasons: location of business, health bennies, hours, pay, and on some occasions, a feeling of success. Any time I hear about businesses failing I look at the business and what I can find that the business can no longer supply its employees. I was a better than average trainer in the Air Force, top 5%, and recognized for it, because I slapped on the back in public and in the face in private. I made a special effort to let the employee keep their self esteem and I had very few that didn’t walk out of the office ready to improve or stretch their capacity with effort. And they were rewarded for it.

I did an exercise with a number of my troops to display the way a task is accomplished. I asked them to determine their one arm as a series of levels of supervision with the fingers being the last part of the sequence. The shoulder was the commander and the fingers were them. I put a dime on the table and asked them to pick it up with the shoulder, elbow, wrist and finally fingers. And with all the parts of the arm making the decision on what to do to get it picked up, guess which part actually picked up the dime. So for the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist, which part was the most important to make sure worked. So make sure you don’t hit a finger with a hammer. You need it.

“The one thing I regret in life is that I never learned to be a plumber.”

Most of plumbing, at least for residential work, is common sense, and today, with YouTube, just about every repair is out there, for all to see.

Now, when you get into new work, then you have to worry about code compliance and minor design considerations (like pressure drop, ventilation requirements, drain slopes, etc.).
