Russia and Ukraine are at a stalemate in the 10-month-old war, a Ukrainian defense official told the BBC.
Major General Kyrylo Budanov, chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, said that the war is "deadlocked" until either side can gain an advantage, such as from more weapons or troops.
In the fall, Ukraine initiated a counteroffensive that pummeled Russian troops in certain regions, leading to a withdrawal of Russian troops from Kherson in November. Ukraine reclaimed several key territories, but then the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut began bearing the brunt of Russian attacks. Russia adopted a more defensive stance in other areas as the weather grew colder, according to the BBC.
This month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the battles in Bakhmut were breaking down the Russian forces, but now advancements on both sides seem to be slowing as the war nears its 11th month.

“a Ukrainian defense official told...”
LOL!
You prefer a source from a Russian military officer?
Why is it so difficult for you to read information from all sides without hurumphing about like a history professor with something up your butt?
Read everything. Then decide.
Scott Ritter is the only source trusted by the Putinists.
Unintelligent defense minister
I was neutral when this started. I know enough about both countries to know this is a lot more than a bad actor invading the good guys.
But as time goes on and more and more becomes known, I’m still not siding with anyone, but I’m getting less and less sympathetic to Ukraine.
meanwhile Europe gets more and more used to doing without Russian oil & gas ...
brilliant fore-planning there, Putin
Why's that? For their sake, I hope the war ends soon so Ukranian lives can be saved.
Even Newsweek is coming around to the idea that the Ukes aren’t going to destroy the Ruskies and take Moscow.
The war started as shock and awe, deteriorated to fire and maneuver, then to combined arms and is now is a logistics war. The next step “down” is trench warfare with static lines. It is almost in that position now.
The loser will be the side that runs out of men, weapons or supplies.
Both sides have long supply lines. Ukraine gets supplied from NATO, Russia has to cross a lot of their own territory. Russia is under economic sanctions which are starting to take effect - but, they also have vast resources.
Ukraine has more will to fight and are killing more Russians than losses of their own forces. - but, they have fewer men to start with.
It is close enough either way that I am not going to try and predict a winner.
It's winter. And the weather is mild right now. That means mud season. It's unlikely to freeze so wait until spring when it warms up and the Ukrainians go on an offensive to seize Crimea.
“You prefer a source from a Russian military officer?”
Given what we now know from Twitter, YES is your answer.
“Why is it so difficult for you to read information from all sides without hurumphing about like a history professor with something up your butt?”
Don’t get me wrong, I know you guys need these types of articles. But I’m still not going to let the propaganda fly when articles are posted implying that the Russians got ‘pummeled’ in Kherson. Even the Neocon Supporters know that wasn’t the case.
The war deteriorated very quickly. It was a matter of trench warfare since April-May, mitigated by the fact that neither side had the troops to hold continuous trench lines over most of the front. It was strongpoints with intervening patrols 6-7 months ago. They seem to almost have enough troops now.
“Scott Ritter is the only source trusted by the Putinists.”
It’s not Ritter writing this, every week, it’s the article that YOU are defending: “Budanov said he expects the attacks to slow as Russia blows through its missile reserves.”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Just the way the neo-con globalist warmongering arms dealers want it.
“But as time goes on and more and more becomes known, I’m still not siding with anyone, but I’m getting less and less sympathetic to Ukraine.”
Basically where I am - neutral, not the business of the US.
“meanwhile Europe gets more and more used to doing without Russian oil & gas ...”
Let me append that, please:
“...& without industry”
All done.
