The recent discovery of two beavers sighted along Matadero Creek in Palo Alto could be a sign of a major comeback for the species in the Bay Area.
Naturalist Bill Leikam, who is the co-founder and president of the Urban Wildlife Research Project, captured trail camera footage of the semiaquatic rodents wandering along the waterway late last month, as the Mercury News first reported. He set up the cameras after he had been tipped off by a resident who claimed to have seen one while they were meditating on the side of the creek, and sure enough, there they were — a male and a female. Now, Leikam treks along the waterway twice a day to check the cameras and scour the beavers’ new home for signs of their whereabouts, finding clues in the form of paw prints in the mud and tooth marks on ash trees. He’s hopeful the pair could help reestablish the species’ population in the area.
“It’s exciting,” Lekam told the Mercury News. “It’s been 160 years since there [have] been any beavers along any of these creeks. It speaks of the health of the creeks.”

I caught a SF Bay Area beaver about 23 years ago.
Still happily married to her.

For Michigan FReepers who travel freeways and say they get off on Big Beaver:
Why is it called Big Beaver Road?
The name Big Beaver can be traced back to the pioneer era. The village of Big Beaver, settled in 1825, was located at the intersection of the Paint Creek Trail, today known as Rochester Road, and an east west two-track that became Big Beaver Road.

This beaver enthusiast is going to get Lyme disease if he keeps meditating down by the creek. My brother has lived in Menlo Park for 40 years and he tells me the whole area is infested with Lyme disease bearing ticks.

Might take time for Adam and Eve beaver to make a new paradise in SF even if they profess to be male and female gender and can procreate. Can’t tell any more in SF.

I know what you're thinking ... It's San Francisco ... how do you define "beaver"? ... Male? Female? Both (i.e., "ambidexterous")?
It's all so confusing in our "enlightened society". I remember when a beaver was a beaver was a beaver ... unless it wasn't worth a dam.
Cheers! & Happy New Year!

They are going to be sorry...
Beavers create plenty of problems, which require significant control.
They tend to block culverts and drains in often successful attempts to make ponds.
The ponds then flood roads and other areas.
