Listen: Jay's story melts hearts as a Buffalo blizzard Christmas miracle
WBEN Radio Buffalo ^ | Dec. 29, 2022 | Tim Wenger

Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - When Cheektowaga Police were alerted to a glass break at the Pine Hill School on East Delevan Avenue Christmas Eve as the blizzard raged outside, officers were overwhelmed with calls and unable to investigate.

Jay Withey was stranded in the blinding and dangerous blizzard that was pummeling Buffalo at the time and had sought shelter in numerous homes along the street as the fuel in his truck was running low. He offered $500 to spend the night on the floor of nearby homes and was turned away, only to return to his truck stranded along the road.

Withey was living the nightmare that hundreds of motorists were experiencing as they were stranded alone, in the dark, and in the bitter grip of a generational blizzard.

At one point during the long hours, another motorist in trouble, Mary, knocked on his window to alert Jay her van was running low on gas and she joined Jay in his truck to wait out the storm. But things got more and more desperate as fuel ran low in Jay's truck, they moved to Mary's, and Jay knew he needed to do something.

The snow was blinding and visibility zero at times, but Jay recalled, "Off to my left I could see a school." And that's all he needed to see.

Jay grabbed the brake pads that were on his front seat and struggled to get to the school through the waist deep snow and repeatedly smashed the window until it broke to gain entry into the building. With the alarm now sounding, Jay nervously and feverishly began to spread the word to Mary and other nearby motorists who were stranded, running low on fuel and slowly beginning to feel the bitter cold take hold.

Another story about the good people in Buffalo.

This man broke into a school to save 24 people.

Then, he left a note apologizing: "To Whom It May Concern: I'm terribly sorry about breaking the school window... I had to save everyone..."

While ghetto Negroes looted Buffalo stores, in another part of town a White Man rescued stranded elderly Negroes by finding them shelter in a school.

Powerful truths on display.

No need for your perspective at all.

Well that is the way it is. All this weepyness about helping some very imprudent traveler is a bit over done. This is Buffalo, blizzard city. When I lived in Ohio I routinely carried thermal blankets, shovel, sand bags, and food and water. It goes with the territory. And if you are whitey, hay man gut it out, whitey is all alone and he better start acting in accordance with this new cultural norm.

At least someone did something. Here in Chicago, those people would have died. Hands down.

I’m a small woman, and despite urges I might have to help someone in those conditions, knowing the people in the Chicagoland area (outside of wealthy suburbs), I’d be hesitant myself. If my husband was with me, it’d be different. Carjackings are escalating in frequency here, even in the burbs. Last month, a car was stolen outside of my former workplace.

Jay Withey sounds like the type of man we all want to be and I fully expect the citizens of Cheektowaga, NY to award & reward him handsomely.

However, this being New York State, He may just get 5-10 for breaking & entering.

God Bless that lady for doing what’s right and necessary, regardless of color.

Yep. Lots of complaints about angry black women here and elsewhere, but there are loads and loads and loads of them doing tough nursing or personal care work like that professionally for all races, with great kindness and often very low pay.

Re #9:

Well said. There are many black women (and men) who are among the kindest and most thoughtful people you will ever meet.

He located the code for the alarm on a paper and was able to silence it using a key pad.

Huh? Is the school's alarm code just posted on the cafeteria wall?

I posted another story last night about a woman who saved a man. That woman happened to be black, and the man she saved happened to be white.

All these stories about heroes are heartwarming. Everyone needs to hear the good news sometimes.

See post #14 above. Plenty of stories are spreading of people helping other people through the blizzard in Buffalo.

Sadly, the death toll still reached 37, last I read.
