Russia Records 20,000 Political Detentions in 2022 – Watchdog
The Moscow Times ^ | Dec. 29, 2022

Posted on 12/29/2022 8:15:47 AM PST by Salohcin

Russia detained at least 20,467 people for political reasons in 2022, according to end-of-year statistics published last week by OVD-Info, one of Russia’s leading independent human rights watchdogs.

At least 19,478 of those were detained for speaking out against Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Other detentions occured at ecological and workers’ rights protests and protests against a November law banning “LGBT propaganda.”

Women accounted for nearly 45% of all those detained for expressing an anti-war position, according to the watchdog.

Russia passed a total of 22 new repressive laws in 2022, and there were just 29 days of the year in which instances of political persecution weren't recorded, OVD-Info said.

In addition to arrests and detentions, the Russian authorities have also looked to crack down on dissent by labeling 176 organizations and individuals as “foreign agents” — a Soviet-era term implying espionage — and recognizing 22 entities as “undesirable” — a label that can lead to criminal prosecution.

More than 210,000 sources of independent online information were blocked by Russia in 2022, according to OVD-Info.

The watchdog also recorded at least 17 instances of extra-judicial persecution of Russian journalists, including an April attack on Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of independent news outlet Novaya Gazeta.

Putin’s Russia continues down the road of totalitarianism. Is this really the champion who is going the save civilization?

Putin’s Russia continues down the road of totalitarianism.

And we are following close behind.

And we are following close behind.

Jan 6 about 725 arrests. Doesn't seem to be close to 20,000 political arrests.

“At least 19,478 of those were detained for speaking out against Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.”

How about we just start with avoiding massive Democrat/MIC corruption, avoiding expensive and destructive wars in places that do not matter to the Average American, and not starting a nuclear war?

Sadly we are moving in that direction, but we are still miles behind the Russians on this path. Nonetheless this our future if the we emulate Putin as some on this forum advocate.

“Jan 6 about 725 arrests. Doesn’t seem to be close to 20,000 political arrests.”

How many political demonstrations (as in Tea Party type protests) has there been since then? Same with Canada after the truckers had their bank accounts emptied. Or what we now know from the Twitter Files.

I’d say we are FAR FURTHER along the path towards China than people want to think here.

As to OVD-Info, considering that most of their funding is from the West (Wikipedia), so their numbers are about as reliable as the Daily Mail.

One other question - since this group OBVIOUSLY does not like Putin, why haven’t they been shut down?

Are we sure it wasn’t 20,002? Political detentions are bad anywhere they are tried, including here.

Why are we being fed all this that has no bearing on what is happening in the US?

Thank God we never imprison people for political reasons

Or just try to ruin them with lawsuits and deplatforming

Do you have anything serious to add to this discussion? Your juvenile response suggests not.

But there were numerous others before that including the Bunkerville and Oregon Standoffs of 2014 and 2016 40 or 50 right there.

Then other folks like Schaeffer Cox the ‘militia organizer’ up in Alaska who is now imprisoned like a Gitmo resident.

We can keep going with the folks in the “Whitmer Kidnap Plot” and we’ve even had pre-mid term election arrests of people who protest outside abortion clinics.

It’s much more than J6 although J6 is a big example of what’s been going on for years.

Yep, there are a lot of Western Paid Foreign Agents, "NGOs", Degenerates and Terrorists infiltrating into Russia.

What do you think the J6 prisoners are?

Did you really think Seth Rich and Jeffery Epstein committed suicide? That dozens of people have caught the Clinton suicide virus?

I've never taken re-animated FR bot accounts seriously, Nickie boy.

There's a good chance that you're not even the original FR account owner.

Except 99% of these 20,000 were help for 4 to 24 hours. Jan 6 protestors are still in jail.

It is always interesting to read behind that which we read.

The Moscow Times is a Netherlands-based media company run by Stichting Potamos. One may read more about the foundation at:

https://stichtingpotamos.org/

So the article is a Dutch report in English (and another in Russian, but none in other European languages including Dutch), and the source (ovdinfo.org) was originally registered with GoDaddy in 2011 and currently hosted in the US according to its Cloudfare info.

By all means, just limit yourself to the Kremlin-approved media. They are not known for slanting the truth, right? 🙄
