Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Tuesday on CNN’s “Situation Room” that the government will hold Southwest Airlines accountable as they canceled thousands of flights over a system meltdown.
Buttigieg said, “I conveyed to the CEO our expectation that they are going to go above and beyond to take care of passengers and to address this. They indicated a number of issues that they’re having with systems, legacy systems for managing their schedule and where their crews are, but the bottom line is the rest of the aviation system has been on the road to recovery since the worst days of the storm going into Friday of last week. As of today, as I’m looking at the different airlines, most of them are in the low single digits in terms of cancellation rates, averaging about five percent for all of the other airlines. For Southwest right now, we appear to be north of 70 percent. So their system really has completely melted down. And I made clear that our department will be holding them accountable for their responsibilities to customers, both to get them through this situation and to make sure that this can’t happen again.”

Aha!
Hah, don't hold your breath while waiting for that to happen.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? is a very old question. In our republic it's supposed to be the citizenry, but so many of us are mal-educated, miss-informed and just plain apathetic that no effective counterforce remains.
You don't suppose they planned it that way do you? < /s >
Who’s holding Buttigieg responsible? It’s easy to be a tough guy when you don’t have to answer to the people. That pretty much goes for Biden and everyone else in his administration. It’s what happens when you have unelected government.
I like Southwest Airlines. They have reasonable fares and go where I need to go. I had a family member with a cancelled flight and they got here the next day. With lower cost airlines there will be glitches and problems.
But with government we have a high cost monopoly with regular systemic problems and poor management.
I’ll take Southwest management over Biden management any day
We used to have someone on FR who said that these airlines that suffered software problems were almost always cyber attacks. I won’t say that’s what this is but it sure does look weird.
Did you catch the weasel words? We will hold them to their obligations or some such. Just another way to say, you have to follow the law with regards to refunds and cancellations.
Weather and mechanical issues that cause cancelations don’t qualify for federal refunds. And when staffing issues are caused by weather delays as they were this week, the later delays don’t trigger automatic refunds either. The same goes for compensation for hotels, meals and transportation.
Straight from the Dept of Transportation web page -”In the United States, airlines are not required to compensate passengers when flights are delayed or cancelled. Compensation is required by U.S. law only when certain passengers are “bumped” from a flight that is oversold. “

So yeah - big hat, no cow
But he sounds so butch when he says it.
Amtrak, on the Northeast Corridor, isn’t bad. I prefer Amtrak over flying to The District of Criminals.
