A Shaw Air Force Base airman shot an individual who attempted to illegally get into the property in South Carolina on Friday.
According to a press release, the individual who attempted to enter the base is being described as a "gate runner," WCBD reported.
The individual was taken to a local hospital....

Maybe before 9-11, it would have been a simple car chase via the SPs. Today, it’s pretty serious stuff.
Shot happens.
Kudos to the Airman… he did his job well.
Good.
He should have been taken to the local morgue.
Great summary.
Anyone who has seen military base entrance security pre- and post-9/11 knows that the world is a whole new place. And I’m sort of surprised they didn’t have the fast pop up bollards to stop the attempt. But I’m totally OK with them shooting to stop things.
This situation sounds like suicide by cop.

Gate Runner? Gate Runner isn’t a country I ever heard of. Do they speak English in Gate Runner?
Quite possible.
Bases now have pop up car stoppers at the gates. Somebody tried to drive into our nearby AF base; the stoppers worked.
I still remember 1972, my unit had just moved into new buildings and the Arms Room Security had not been certified yet.
I was locked in the Arms Room with a loaded M 1911. I had to sign a statement, full page single spaced, that basically said if I shot anyone I would go to prison but if someone broke in and I didn’t shoot them I’d go to prison.
Miss me some Catch 22...
Did Army basic at Ft. Lost in the woods Misery spring of ‘77.
Had guard duty at some nondescript warehouse, 3 rounds, general orders on a card hung around my neck.
I challenged a guy attempting to come through the gate without showing me any ID to the point I locked, loaded, drew down on him until he - and a couple of his coworkers - turned around and left cursing, pitching a fit.
Drill sergeant showed up right then - LATE - and read me the riot act. I held up my copy of my orders and said “I only did what you told me to do, drill sergeant.”
Not another word was said about it.
I was seconds away from pulling the trigger on the fat GS employee who should have just shown me his ID (it was written on the damned building door “Must present government ID for entry”).
I’d already shot a guy the year before back home (forced home invasion, known rapist, scared the heck outta my mom), another one wouldn’t have made me sad, just made for mountains of paperwork.
That Airman, and thousands like him, should be lined up on our southern borders RFN (that’s RFQ for my southern friends) with the same orders.
Depends. If it involved nuclear weapons, or Class A defense assets, he probably would have been shot.
The big sign reads ...lethal force... something something. Most people get the idea.
Ping.
Say gate runner again. I dare you.
So we can shoot someone illegally attempting to enter out house?
Sounds fair to me
My boss, driving a Pete, pulling a side dump, ignored the gate guards at Minot AFB.
Those posts come up out of the road really fast
Sounds like he wanted to be remembered as a “Blade Runner” in the old movie.
