Egg prices are hitting records, driven by an avian-influenza outbreak that has killed tens of millions of chickens and turkeys this year across nearly all 50 states.
Wholesale prices of Midwest large eggs hit a record $5.36 a dozen in December, according to the research firm Urner Barry. Retail egg prices have increased more than any other supermarket item so far this year, climbing more than 30% from January to early December compared with the same period a year earlier, and outpacing overall food and beverage prices, according to the data firm Information Resources Inc.

Some suppliers are projecting potential relief in price by February or March, but cold weather could hamper production in the near term, executives said.

Angelo Caputo’s bought extra-large eggs for $5.09 a dozen recently, up from $1.30 at the start of the year, Mr. O’Neill said.

Cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have so far this year led to the deaths of about 58 million birds, the deadliest outbreak in U.S. history, according to Agriculture Department data. Entire poultry flocks are destroyed after an infection is confirmed, to help limit the outbreak’s spread.

The current outbreak has largely been attributed to wild birds spreading the virus to farms as they migrate across the country, agriculture-industry officials have said. While the 2015 outbreak ended in June, cases this year continued to pop up throughout the fall.

Anyone see a pattern here? We're being culled.
Jumbo eggs at a local store $7.85 a dozen
Most people understand that food is grown and packaged in the back of grocery stores, so when nutters come along and offer the same at lower prices who knows what the produce really is - maybe it came out of a grocery store dumpster.
This has been going on for decades in the US. Back in the 30s when the bridge to Key West, Florida was completed, people refused to buy fresh produce because every one knew it was grown in cans.
As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does."
Scary times.
Kroger jumbo eggs $3.89 today. They’re good.
Kroger here two days ago was $4.85
When President Trump was in office, I was buying large eggs at the grocer for $1.05 for 18 eggs.
Hmmmm.. Big prices, but there doesn't seem to be a shortage.. Lots of eggs in the stores... (?)
Milton Friedman said economists only know how to make two things: Shortages and surpluses, If you want shortages, set the price below what the market price is, if you want surpluses, set it above the market price. This explains gas lines in the 1970's, and empty airline seats in the same era.
When Joe Biden's handlers intervene to help there will simultaneously be shortages of eggs and black markets.
Calling Dr. Fowlchi (see what I did there?)
If you were remotely close to me, I would happily buy.
Every so often a good fellow around here brings eggs from his chickens.
They are excellent.
They intend to starve us. Food supplies will dwindle until SURPRISE! There is abundant food now! Just show your digital vax passport at the federal dispensary and pick up your ration of WEF approved cricket kibble.
Well the chicken yards are within eye sight of where I sell, and pointed that out..
Our nearest (country) neighbor has chickens and their eggs are wonderful.
Don’t get me wrong I do have buyers but you get these oddballs..had a lady who refused to by clean eggs, would only buy dirty...
The absolute BEST INVESTMENT I made this year, was the purchase of three hens!! LOL!!
“More of a mystery to me is the handful of items that haven’t budged in price at all.”
That is a clue for how long and complex some supply chains are...for some products it takes well over a year for inventory to make its way through the supply pipeline.
An old classic on this topic:

Eggzactly. It is a conundrum.
