Texas School District Moves to Train Staff to be Armed for Defense

On Monday, December 12, 2022, the Keller School District board voted to implement the School Guardian program for the District. The Keller Independent School District (ISD), with over 35,000 students, is one of the largest in the state. From The epochtimes.com :

A large North Texas school district is moving forward with its plan to allow armed staff members to protect students in the event of an active shooter situation.

On Monday night, the board of trustees for the Keller Independent School District (KISD) approved the decision in a 4–3 vote. The district, which serves more than 35,000 students, is set to become the largest in North Texas to implement a guardian program.

The new policy would be on a volunteer basis with a high degree of oversight. The program would require a rigorous selection process. Participants would undergo a law enforcement psychological exam, a physical, and firearm testing with requalification twice a year.

In September 2013, Texas passed legislation that authorized School Districts to participate in programs designed to aid in the protection of schools. One was the school Marshal program, which required intense training and limited School Marshals to one per 200 students; the other was the school Guardian plan which allowed much more flexibility and required 15 to 20 hours of training per school guardian.

It appears relatively few school districts have participated in the School Marshal program. Ballotpedia lists 1022 school districts in Texas. Four hundred forty-five school districts are participating in the School Guardian program, as of October of 2022, according to the article in the Epoch Times.  The vote for the program was 4 to 3. A police officer in a school costs about $100,000 a year.

A staff Guardian in a school costs about $500-$1000 a year, because they are already there, and the volunteer.

Teacher? Arming Teachers?
The same teachers that form the teacher’s unions?
The same teachers that go from public school to college to public school?
The same teachers that that want to keep the schools closed?

Color me very worried.

Revolver? OK Boomer.

The only revolver suitable for concealed carry is the Smith J frame or the Ruger LCR. Both are 5 shot in .38-.357.

Wtih all of the fantastic ultra-compact high capacity pistols available, I’d choose a Sig P365, Ruger Max 9, or even an LCP Max over any revolver.

I think all teachers carried when I was in school back in the 70s (in west Texas).

The type of firearm is far less important then the person using it.

I have carried both revolvers’ and semi-autos for over 5 decades in harms way.

I never felt under armed.

But then I have fired well over 100 thousands of rounds through handguns.

Students also had their shotguns and deer rifles in gun racks in their pickups. It was normal and very rarely resulted in violence.

Reference the opening scenes in Red Dawn (the original, not the crummy remake.)

Typical Texas Teutonic Germanic bureaucratic extremism. To have a 38 the teacher has to be vetted like they were transporting plutonium. Texas is utterly terrified … of anything without an authorizing law with 17 subsections and conditions.

A 4 inch model 10 .38 conceals very nicely. And despite todays hit movies it is fast, easy and quite capable of quickly settling accounts.

Back in the day when I was growing up that wasn’t unusual.

"Color me very worried."

Don't be. Anyone who volunteers for this duty is self-selected far right conservative. Lefties would be all like..."carry a gun?? not me!"

Given their performance at Uvalde....I'll take the armed teachers any day.

Not all teachers are the type you worry about - in South Mississippi, we still have teachers who vote Republican, aren’t afraid to admit they’re religious and several mornings a week, local news airs a class standing, hands over hearts, and reciting the Pledge...I imagine Texas has it’s share of similar teachers.

I have a 4 inch model 19 Combat Magnum, and if you think a 4" K-Frame conceals very nicely then you're wearing a 'vest or some other jacket or bulky cover garment over it.

Remember we're talking about teachers here, wearing business casual, usually Dockers and polo shirts, teaching all day. Any OWB with cover garment ain't gonna cut it for continued concealment day after day in front of students.

IWB tucked carry, or pocket carry will be more common than coming to class dressed for fly fishing.

Purse, briefcase or knapsack. There are many different ways to "carry".
