Congressional Republicans succeeded in slashing funding for the Internal Revenue Service in the negotiations over President Biden's $1.7 trillion omnibus budget.
Senate Republicans forced Democrats and the White House to cut more than $275 million from the IRS over the next year. GOP lawmakers demanded the cut, arguing that the IRS is already slated to receive additional money over the next decade thanks to Biden's recently passed $739 billion Inflation Reduction Act.
"This process was far from perfect, but ultimately it allowed Republican redlines to be adhered to and because of that I will urge my colleagues to support this package," said Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Overall, the budget allocates $12.3 billion for the IRS — 2.2% less than the nearly $12.6 billion the agency received in the last fiscal year. The Biden administration initially sought a $1.3 billion increase for the IRS this year.
The budget deal does not include additional money for the IRS to modernize its tax processing infrastructure. IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig has said that agency's antiquated computer system was responsible for a large backlog in process returns over the past two years.
Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which passed Congress over the summer, included $80 billion in additional funding for the IRS over the next decade. Democrats argued the money would help crack down on wealthy tax cheats, while Republicans said it would only hurt the middle class.

BFD.
So irs gets 1.1 billion instead of 1.4 billion?
This is a win?
20 years ago the IRS attempted to “modernize” their 17 separate systems and integrate them. Four Billion dollars later the process was written off as a failure.
I don’t know if they have done any modernization since then. It makes more sense to do it piecemeal.
Oh yeah, It sure feels good to get W......This is crazy. We are getting screwed hard, and buy our own representatives. This whole two years seems surreal. I have given up hope and have now taken a very realistic view that America is doomed.
It helps to accept that which means that I’m going to concentrate on preparing for the worst case of everything.
.
It’s all a big win if you have no living family and you plan on dying in the next six months.
The Debt is looming and it will get its piece of flesh.
Debt and ratio to GDP can’t be outrun.
I heard only one Republican Senator raise hell over this bill, Rand Paul. I think Rand should leave the GOP. He doesn’t sound like any other Republican Senator.
So, they still get their 87.000 new agents?
I can’t see a way they can be successful at modernization considering there are multiple interpretations of the tax code and the tax code constantly changes. This is just another argument for a flat consumption tax collected by the states to replace the entire tax code.
Yes, that’s part of The Inflation Explosion Act that begins Jan 1.
Maybe it’s just propaganda.
Lawmakers must think we’re stupid.
It’s a measure of how pathetic congressional Republicans are that they consider this a win. From a balanced budget perspective, funding for the IRS is good since it increases revenues from fat cats, the people who pay accountants to weasel out of taxes.
The GOP could have pushed for funding cuts from the agencies that actually spend the money and on wasteful stuff. But it helps their globalist billionaire overlords so this was the priority. This is not populist conservatism.
McConnell served his owners and they’re trying to trick Republican voters into thinking they got the favor. No thanks.
The GOP(e) will NEVER win ANYTHING involving the patriotism of the USA, as long as we few, band of brothers, are alive!

Shelby will agree to anything that will still get him his $600 million earmark. Another greedy ghoul stuffing his pockets on the way out!
My guess is that we will see inflation rate creep up to 10% by February. The Federal Reserve increased rates by half point in the last meeting. I think that was a mistake. They need to be more aggressive. .75 or one point.
The Federal Reserve probably thought that with the Republicans winning the House, that would put brakes on the spending by Congress.
>> to cut more than $275 million from the IRS
I’m waiting for amendments to be processed. The delays are problematic. Furthermore, every IRS agent I dealt with was very helpful, and a few were former small biz owners. That’s the caveat.
Regarding the girth, funding should side with leniency. The net revenue will be similar whether lenient or strict.
News flash, I’m starting to not care whether you are male or female, black, white, green, purple or blue, a private or a general, in the Army, Air Force, Navy, or military... a personal inside joke that is golden!
