Three people have died after a blast tore through a pipeline near the Russian–Ukrainian border in the third explosion to hit infrastructure in days.
Photos and video today showed pillars of fire erupting from the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod pipeline in the Vurnar district of Chuvashia, Russia, per Reuters.
Local officials on Telegram and the TASS news agency said the flow of gas through the pipeline has been cut off as of 1:50pm local time.
Three people have died and one has been injured, emergency services told TASS.
The Chuvashia regional Emergencies Ministry said the pipeline blew up during planned upkeep work new the village of Kalinino.
A loud noise reportedly ripped through the area moments before the blast, raising fears of a plane crash, witnesses claimed.
Amid the blaze, villagers nearby were unable to approach their houses as the temperature by the pipeline was ‘so high’, the Kommersant newspaper said.
Local regional chief Oleg Nikolaev said the intense heat has made it ‘impossible to approach the scene immediately’.
‘Prompt measures will be taken to eliminate the problems and perform all the necessary work,’ he added.
The pipe, operated by the state-owned energy company Gazprom, is a vital lifeline for Europe that transports gas from Russia via Ukraine to the continent.
It stretches across the Russian-Ukrania border near the Sudzha gas pipeline in the Kursk region
This means that what little gas the EU imports from Russia will be impacted.
It’s the third time in a week that a blast has rocked Russia’s energy infrastructure.
A massive explosion tore through an oil and gas field in the east Siberian district of Ust-Kut, Irkutsk, on yesterday.

It surprises me that there has been little talk about the fact that there are several million Ukrainians spread across every town in Russia.
Did Putin expect them to do nothing while he bombed their mothers and sisters?

Drone defense is cool.
You mean like the drones of the MSM defending and supporting every thing that Presidementia XiJinBiden says and does?
If you think it's Ukraine trying to hurt Russia's gas sales, the best response is drill baby drill.
If you think Brandon sent his goons to do it, the best response is drill baby drill.
If you think the EU leaders sent their goons to do it and push their message of "see, we need green energy because fossil fuel is not dependable even if Russia is nice", the best response is drill baby drill.
If you think someone did it yelling "allahu ackbar", the best response is drill baby drill.
It doesn't matter who did it or why, the best response is drill baby drill.
Victoria Nuland.
“The Chuvashia regional Emergencies Ministry said the pipeline blew up during planned upkeep work new the village of Kalinino.”
Poor babies.
Sabotage by Ukraine or Russians?
Glad to see it.
A gas pipeline is a most vulnerable objective in a war.
It does not move, it does not fight back and it is highly flammable.
Who is doing this? Ukraine? Maybe. My money is on MI6 and CIA. They better not get caught. This is to blunt the new Russian push being planned. It might undermine Putin’s hold on The Russian people or just make em mad enough to take out London.
Update on Russian military operations in Ukraine for December 21, 2022:
- Pentagon admits Russia is gaining ground in Bakhmut; - Zelensky visit to Bakhmut mirrors similar visit to Lysychansk before it fell to Russian forces;
- Western media admits Russia has Ukraine outgunned 6 to 1 in Bakhmut;
- Claims that Russian losses are as significant as catastrophic toll Ukraine is suffering in Bakhmut does not reflect reality if Russia outguns Ukraine significantly;
- Bakhmut is a significant transportation hub and a crucial fortified position along one of Ukraine's last major defensive lines in the east;
- The fall of Bakhmut may lead to a similar breakthrough like Popasna;
- Russian forces appear interested in destroying Ukraine's military at Bakhmut more than taking the city itself;
