(NEXSTAR) – Officials across several U.S. states are warning against a rise in scams that leave SNAP beneficiaries without any money in their account and no other way to buy groceries.
One mom in Oklahoma didn’t realize she had been victimized until she tried to buy a $1 drink. Her EBT card was rejected for “insufficient funds,” Nexstar’s KFOR reported. She later found out someone had spent all $462 at a market in Brooklyn, New York.
A single father of eight kids, also in Oklahoma, recently had $800 stolen from his account. “I don’t have that extra support. I can’t call my mom. I can’t call my sister. We don’t come from money; [they] took from a hard working blue collar worker,” William Hassell told KFOR.

They got scammed? What about us?
Well we know what his hobby is.
Not sustainable. However....let it burn.
I have a simple idea. How about people pay their own way instead of making the rest of us pay for them?
We get scammed when we pay our taxes for this crap.
You have to remember the people receiving the benefits aren’t on the high end of the IQ scale and relatively easy to take advantage of.
These scammers should get the death penalty when they’re caught. They’re obviously smart enough to do something constructive in life, yet they choose to victimize those who have little.
I can’t get to the original article. How did they get “scammed”?
Look into some of the “victims” scamming themselves so they can get more $.
From the article:

SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and used to be called the Food Stamp Program. Scammers appear to be targeting the funds two ways: skimming and texts. Skimming basically steals a person’s payment information from a card reader that’s been tampered with. Another strategy, officials say, is targeting people with fake texts saying there are issues with a recipient’s SNAP account, convincing them to hand over their pin.

"...those who have little."? I've seen these recipients in line ahead of me in the grocery. They are buying high-end fruits, meats, and other items I wouldn't buy due to their cost. They are not dressed in rags. They have several kids. And they are generally driving cars. In many cases, they themselves are scammers.
Thanks. So legitimate victims, not trying to pull a fast one and got out-smarted by better bad guys.
Since government and law enforcement do nothing to prosecute these scammers, just post the photo, name, and addresses of them on a website. Let those they scammed have direct representation on solving the problem.
Hey that’s great then a lot of people will be starving because they can’t afford food. Thanks for the kindness! Freepers are the kindest most generous people on earth - but you are not one of them
Make sure to give all 8 of those kids a vasectomy or tube tie — before they can preproduce.
I’m not sure why I should be paying for these peoples’ groceries anyway. When they use the government to steal it from me why should I care if someone steals it from them?
“The USDA Food and Nutrition Service advises SNAP users to never share their PIN with anybody, check their accounts regularly for unauthorized charges, and inspect card readers for anything that looks suspicious attached before inserting or swiping. Anyone who believes they’ve been victimized by a scammer should contact their local SNAP office.”
many ways usually with something attached to the card reader at a store, or by fake texts getting them to reveal their account number.
Skimming is a thing that can happen to anyone.
Giving out a PIN number to a stranger? That’s dumb..
