My mom also raised 5 boys pretty much by herself. She’s about 5’ tall and all of 120 pounds at her heaviest. Not one of us boys ever talked back to her more than once.

I raised all my boys without hitting, threatening to hit, or grounding them. All I needed was a stern expression and tone of voice. Sometimes I lectured them, and sometimes I had to raise my voice. But, overall, they were good kids, much nicer than most other kids. Eventually, we became a single-parent household. They all grew to outsize me (which was not hard to do), but they never gave me any trouble. I thought we all had a fun family life and got along well.
Years later, one confessed that, growing up, he walked on eggshells around me like I was a ticking time bomb. So, somehow, without ever even threatening to hit my kids, without even threatening punishment, without ever wanting to make my kids fearful of me, I’d managed to scare the living **** out of them. It must not be difficult to do.
My guess is this woman was an overwhelmed single parent of a seriously disturbed young man, probably a psychopath.
