The majority of Japanese people do not support raising taxes to fund military expansion, Kyodo reported on Sunday, citing a survey the news agency conducted after the government announced Japan's biggest military build-up since World War Two.
Japan on Friday announced a $320 billion (S$435b) military spending plan to buy missiles capable of striking China and to ready the country for any sustained conflict, as missile tests by nearby North Korea, China's claim over Taiwan and the invasion of Ukraine by Japan's western neighbour Russia stoke fear of war.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida this month said his government would not hike taxes for the next fiscal year beginning April 1 but would raise them in stages toward fiscal 2027 to secure funding to boost the defence budget.

Of course they don’t.
For 76 years the United States has been providing for their defense, Why should they want to pay for it when Uncle Sucker takes care of that little thing?
Well, Japan, prepare to embrace the suck.
You would think the criminal politicians we have could have least run a profitable protection scheme. Just another reason the mafia has higher approval than Congress.
The Japanese should understand that the Chinese have long memories. Not only are they planning to dominate East Asia (and beyond) but they might be looking east for a bit of payback. That,combined with the fact that they’re not afraid of the US anymore should be kept in mind.
The Japanese could bankrupt their economy and still not be militarily competitive with China.
They know how this ends....same as WWII.
The only way they win is refuse to play the game.
A people afraid of prenancy and children is also afraid to defend itself.
China needn’t attack, they have already won.
They were lucky the past 76 years. Now they see with Biden, it's going to be difficult to count on the Americans as a reliable ally from this point.
You may not remember, but Japan is an island.
Japan is many islands.

Some are illegally occupied by Russia and China. Japan is wise to build up their military.
