A year ago, when the Russians began to assemble forces along the Russia – Ukraine border, Western planners were sure that whatever the Russians were planning could only last a few months. They simply lacked the resources to put an army in the field, especially against a heavily defended opponent, for a long time. The Western response to the Russian advance into Ukraine was predicated on this. By now, the war should have been over due to a Russian withdrawal.
This short time frame thinking is clear in the economic sanctions that were levied against Russia when the war started. It did not require an advanced degree in economics to see that these sanctions would hurt the West. Cutting off a critical vendor has to have a negative impact. Western countries basically went to war with their most important supplier of energy. They were willing to do this because the war would be short and Russia would surrender to the West.
On its face this always looked like a crazy decision, but it was based on two assumptions that have turned out to be even nuttier. The first assumption was that Russia was nothing but a giant gas station run by drunken peasants. Western economic sanctions would send the country into economic turmoil and those drunken peasants would quickly revolt against their stupid rulers. Back in the spring, predictions like this were placed all over Western media.

“Baby, It’s Cold, Inside!”
Ukraine and Russia are of a different mind. Ukraine is intent on cleansing Ukraine of anything Russian and that's a greater wrong than Russia claiming lands that are/were dominated by Russians.
Both are wrong.
Whistling past the LNG tankers...
That is an excellent article
Indeed it was.
Russia isn’t going to let the West stage a color coup in Moscow.
Under Minsk, Donbass would have been akin to “ Kurdistan”
Autonomous but still part of Ukraine. A multi cultural nation bounded by lines on a map derived from old Europe history.
Of course we now know thanks to honesty by Angela Merkel that Minsk was a ruse by the Europeans and US to gain time to militarize Ukraine for proxy war vs Russia. Ukrainian nationalism requires elimination of other cultures, using the premise of Ukrainian cultural and racial superiority and destiny ( where have we seen that before)
The estimates and analyses of the West vs Russian intentions and capabilities have been astoundingly inept. Or intentionally framed for a wider agenda of gaining US popular and world support for destroying a rival seen as threatening to American Empire. An evil rival that is a threat that must be contained, then destroyed,
By people who, for whatever reason will not feel successful and vindicated as victors, until Russia, like Carthage, is deconstructed
The problem is that the bear isn't going to stop at the Donbass and Crimea.
The more you feed a bear the more they want.
My take on this war is that it is part the US’s two front war against Russia & China which have been in the fore front of trying to end the Dollar as the world’s dominant currency. It’s all about money, as all wars are.
Given the war of words -- and words only -- on some of these threads, yours is refreshing. "Both are wrong."
Both are also not NATO members, not EU members and not our circus and not our clowns, so have some of us said.
What sticks in my mind in reflecting of this remains the fact that the princelings of Biden, Pelosi, Kerry and Romney figured greatly in the years leading up to this mess, and were pocketing large monies for themselves and friends. The color of American corruption taints the whole truly bloody mess.
Very interesting article.
i think you’re wrong.
This thread may have a couple of answers for you.
Maybe that started to happen, ... just not in the country the Neocons expected.
Can’t help but feel that the US is going to be greatly hated for the economic turmoil and suffering. With our porous border and possible collapse of dollar it is also a plan to dethrone US independence and bring under the WEF umbrella. I can see the angry bear taking 3 ribs. Some folks love war so that’s what they get. May it backfire greatly.
