I teach a class to help students prepare for their interview. Anyone who has even low-intermediate English skills should have no problem. The vocabulary for the reading and writing portions and the 100 civics/history questions are available at the USCIS website, as are study materials. The bulk of the 100 questions should be considered general knowledge. Classes such as mine should be readily available in urban areas, and there are many good online resources. Anyone who takes time to prepare should have no problem passing civics. The tough parts are The lawyerly language of the application, and answering personal information questions from the application. I tell my students that they need to be prepared to answer any red flag questions from their application. I go over possible ways to do that. We do mock interviews.

I did a pilot of the Trump administration’s proposed test. It added some content questions, and more in-depth questions on history, but most of the changes were a lot of the old questions asked in different ways.

I think the test as it is serves its purpose.
