We may not find out what the truth is for decades, if ever.

The safe default position is to assume that russia lies, always, about everything. One of their own greatest thinkers and writers, Solzhenitsyn, said as much:
“They lie to us, we know they’re lying, they know we know they’re lying, but they keep lying to us, and we keep pretending to believe them.”
So if russia says it’s not torturing civilians and targeting hospitals, that means it most certainly IS torturing civilians and targeting hospitals. Not saying that Ukraine may not also be exaggerating, no comment on whatever BS the MSM is spewing, but the baseline fact is that russia lies. Always has, always will.
The complaint about a tabloid publication of the past alleging that German soldiers bayoneted Belgian babies has been common among neo-Nazis. That propaganda in the form of a complaint has been regurgitated for decades. It’s a tactic to distract from the many atrocities committed by the German government during the world wars including real atrocities committed against Belgians.
The Russian government and army have been downright nasty and psychopathic in many ways. There’s no way Russian propaganda, no matter now many times repeated, will change what Russia has done to its own reputation.
Russia has already lost.
