Republican support for Trump 2024 run collapsing, poll shows

GOP backing for former President Donald Trump’s third consecutive White House bid has fallen apart over the past several months, with most Republican voters saying they’d prefer another candidate to carry on his policies in 2024, according to a poll released Tuesday.

While 31% of Republican and Republican-leaning independents want Trump, 76, to run again in two years, 61% say they would rather have another GOP standard-bearer, the USA Today/Suffolk University survey found.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 44, is their preferred choice.

DeSantis, who cruised to re-election Nov. 8, leads Trump by 23 percentage points — 56% to 33% — in a head-to-head primary matchup, the poll shows.

Nearly two-thirds of Republican and GOP-leaning voters (65%) say the governor should run for the White House in 2024, with just 24% saying he shouldn’t.

“Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump,” David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA Today.

Trump, who is facing state and federal investigations over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and for keeping classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, has seen enthusiasm among Republicans for a third White House try plummet in recent months, falling from 60% support in July to 56% in October to 47% now.

The former president has also seen his favorability rating fall among the Republican faithful — skidding from 75% in October to 64% in December.

In a hypothetical 2024 matchup, Trump lags behind President Biden by 47% to 40%, the poll found.

But DeSantis tops Biden 47% to 43% in a hypothetical 2024 election matchup.

The survey also showed that Biden’s approval rating has improved slightly, climbing a point to 46% from October, while his unfavorable rating fell a point to 50%.

So you saw the DeSantis “on the eighth day” ad and didn’t think it was the most sanctimonious thing you’ve ever seen?

No, I didn't see the ad, and don't care. He won massively, so whatever he's doing worked.

In any case, for one Republican to tear down another Republican while he is running for office is...despicable. And like I said, it convinced me that Trump would burn the house down before he'd let anyone else live there. And I think that's how a lot of other Republicans saw it as well.

Maybe you think he's right to feel that way, and should try to destroy any other Republicans who he fears may challenged him. If so, that's fine. You're clearly entitled to that opinion. But I think a lot of Republicans who want the Democrats out of power see it differently.

Did the White House burn?
Did Trump huff and puff and blow the White House in?

Is that why Brandon had a fake White House set built?

And yes, DeSantis is establishment or Ryan wouldn’t be out there pushing him like a drug peddler.

From June 2016:

Paul Ryan endorses Donald Trump

https://www.cnn.com/2016/06/02/politics/paul-ryan-endorses-donald-trump/index.html

Ryan is a small government conservative whose entire focus was on trying to reduce federal spending, and entitlement programs in particular. He managed to push through the House a crippling amendment to ObamaCare that failed only because of McCain in the Senate.

Ryan may not be a MAGA Republican, but he also is very far from wanting to keep socialists in power. He's supporting DeSantis because he thinks DeSantis is the most conservative Republican who can win in 2024.

That ad was so close to blasphemy and the only thing that saved DeSantis is Trump turning on the humor. He wasn’t destroying DeSantis, he saved his backside. Also that ad shows he surrounded himself with really, really bad advisors.

Ryan did everything in his power to destroy Trump. He only came around when it was given Trump would run, and then he did everything in his power to sabotage the America First movement.

Ryan is a Romney republican which is why he chose not to run, he knows the base will never forgive him.

I assumed it was obvious I was using a metaphor, but to answer your question, no. He did not literally take gasoline and burn the White House down. Although he seemed pretty happy about the dumb-assery of January 6 until he saw it was starting to backfire.

Anyway, I'll stick by the metaphorical point that Trump seems like he'd rather see a Democrat win the White House than any Republican not-named "Trump", and that he'd be willing to ruin any other Republican he perceives was either in his way, or who he thinks it might be amusing to try to destroy just for the fun of it.

Although I do think that even if he tried it, he now lacks the pwoer to make his nicknames stick.

Oh, I agree that Ryan disliked Trump and would have preferred other Republicans. And that he disagreed with some of the MAGA agenda. No argument from me on that.

I'm simply pointing out that the issues that he really did care about -- and that he worked with Trump on -- were conservative issues. He wanted less federal spending. He wanted to reform entitlements. He wanted to kill Obamacare, and he wanted tax reform. Those are/were core Republican issues at one point, which is why Ryan pledged from the very beginning to support whomever the GOP nominee was.

So again...he's supporting DeSantis because he sees DeSantis as the most conservative Republican able to win the Presidency. So I don't think Ryan's support is a rational reason to vote against DeSantis in 2024 any more than it was a rational reason to vote against Trump in 2016. Ryan just doesn't like Democrats.

MAGA and the GOP may have a head on collision in 2024, like in 2016..

The GOP has its work cut out for it.
Because Trump’s 4 years stacked up against their decades is a bad bet for the GOP..
Trump actually has a track record now. Of being an enemy of establishment R’s and D’s and their ways of doing swamp business..

Doesn’t mean they won’t try to take MAGA out.
He did in 4 years what GOP had no reason to do anytime they held power:

Expose the R vs D con..

Now, it’s clear.
Many R’s actually prefer Biden in the White House than Trump..

TDS is a hell of a condition...

So how does DeSaintUs run against Trump?

Easy. He gives Trump great credit for the awesome things he did to put America First and Make America Great Again and promise to continue on in this spirit.

And then he sighs and quietly reminds voters that at the end of the day, Donald Trump, who'll be 78-years old, handed over the country to Dr. Fauci who directed to shut everything down while governors like Ron DeSantis, and others, were fighting to keep their states free.

And that's how Donald Trump winds up stammering and stuttering on the debate stage.

It'll be that easy.

Right, and I’m sure you still believe in the tooth fairy. Sorry, the guy had to run for the hills because it was obvious he couldn’t win re-election.

With the folks I know, support for POTUS Donald Trump is stronger than ever

Well, that settles it then.

I don’t see how that changes the point. You can not be MAGA and still not want to see Democrats in office. That’s where Ryan is/was.

So what you're saying is that ad was going to cost DeSantis his re-election until Trump made a joke about it the day before the election and gave DeSantis a 20 point lead?

You cannot possibly be serious.

Yet almost each and every last one of Trump's personally hand-picked candidates went down in flames.

He is a COC corporate shill who is willing to spend trillions on Ukraine while cutting Social Security for Americans.

Just to clarify, do you view everyone as being either 100% MAGA, or 100%...Romney/Cheney, etc.? You don't see any kind of spectrum or continuum at all? So that either you support Donald Trump unreservedly for 2024, or you must have been in favor of impeaching him and removing him from office?

I have no idea what Ryan's position is on Ukraine, but even if you are correct, that still does not put him in alignment with Democrats, who consistently want to expand and increase entitlement programs rather than reduce them. And that's true regardless of their position on Ukraine.
