With just weeks left in his final term, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey played a key role in blocking sweeping anti-money laundering legislation that was created to choke off the billions of dirty dollars pouring into the United States from shady operators, including drug traffickers, oligarchs and corrupt foreign leaders.
The outgoing Pennsylvania Republican pushed last week to halt the reforms from being included in the nation’s annual defense spending bill in a blow to advocates who had gained bipartisan support to wage the most comprehensive crackdown on money laundering in a generation.
Citing the flow of suspicious money into the country, lawmakers say the ENABLERS Act targets the people who have long helped drug kingpins and others move their money into the US – and hide it — including some lawyers, accountants, and financial advisors.
Mr. Toomey declined an interview request through his staff, but a top Republican aide on the Banking Committee said the veteran lawmaker objected to the legislation being tucked into the National Defense Authorization Act — a must-pass bill — without any hearings.
He noted that two recently enacted laws “gave regulators immense new powers” to take on those who hide corrupt money in the U.S. financial system.
“Before expanding [the U.S. Treasury’s] authority yet again, there should at least be a hearing and a markup, as well as a discussion amongst lawmakers of the concerns raised by administration officials on this bill,” said Brad Grantz, GOP staff director for the Banking Committee.
Mr. Toomey is the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee.

Just more laws to enslave Americans.
Wonder what job is he angling for after this month????? Another uniparty corrupt member!!!! But then look who is taking his position from PA.
Good for him.
NO MORE BILLS TILL JANUARY!
“the ENABLERS Act”
How much time did they waste coming up with the words to go with the Act’s title??
Let the piece of legislation die. Because anything that could get through Chuck Schumer’s Senate isn’t worth passing.
Why tuck things into the spending bill. Vote on them independently.
Bipartisan legislation is usually bad.
This is definitely one I agree with Toomey on. His reasoning seems very sound as well.
I don’t see anything in my copy of the Constitution that says jack about who gives money to whom. There is no need for an FDA, DEA, IRS, or ATF whatsoever.
The Gazette makes it sound like a bad thing he blocked it!
What? You don't like sausage? /s

Who paid Pat off?
The SWAMP never stops.
If it is so great and wonderful, it can stand on it’s own and not be part of the defense bill.
Any bill passed by this Congress does the opposite that is intended. They want everything passed without time to read. They want everything passed with only a few at the top of the uniparty writing the bills. That disenfranchises you and me. Our representatives have no input. McConnell and McCarthy are both onboard with this approach and have allowed it to occur many times in the past. Both have to go.
