Most attorney/client contracts have a provision that it is more like one-half of the amount recovered should a trial or appeal be required. It varies, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case in this instance. The firm spent years on this case with the majority of their firm’s resources geared towards it almost exclusively. There was a lot of expenses that they probably fronted to be reimbursed upon recovery. Meanwhile, their office overhead still had to be paid each month. However, some attorneys do reduce their fee somewhat in high profile, high dollar cases.
I’ve been following this at Legal Insurrection since the beginning.
The jury awarded Gibson’s attorney fees from Oberlin.
Not sure about all of the post-trial Gibson fees generated by Oberlin’s endless delays and appeals.
Since the verdict years ago, over $4,000 per day in interest accrued.
