It is still at least a decade — maybe decades — away from commercial use

So maybe in 50 years. Or 100 years. We might be able to build a fusion reactor today. But it's not going to be cheap. In meantime, oil is the way to go. And if you're cool with the risks that comes with radiation, nuclear energy is an excellent alternative and it's "carbon-free".
