The new six-month program will allow police to place speed cameras in school and work zones.
A total of 10 cameras will be put up. The program will cost $200,000, and if successful, it will be extended.
“There’s one reason why we’re doing this and that is to save lives,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay said.

Two students were killed over what time period. Was speed the cause of the crash.
How many vehicles a day travel those routes.
How many travel those routes during non school hours.
Well the cameras only be used during school hours.
Saving lives is not always a good reason to do something.
that is to save lives,
You have a rash of deaths you can point to?
Was speeding the cause?
There is nothing so permanent than a temporary government program.
There have no major/unusual accidents in that area. I believe they are also doing this I’m the City of Alexandria which abuts Fairfax County. First school zones to “protect” the children. Next everywhere to “ watch” the rest of us.
There’s really no excuse to speed for three blocks. How quick do you have to go somewhere?
Let me guess the students were zooming along in a vehicle there over aid government parents provided.
License plate reading, facial recognition, Speed cameras to go up near some Fairfax County schools
I was sent a photo of my car “speeding” along with a $100 fine. Funny, the car looked still in the photo. Frankly I think this is lazy and probably illegal. Weren’t there rulings on red light cameras already?
This is nothing more than a revenue generation scheme.
Put some police cars there with the lights going. That will slow people down immediately.
Speed cameras = revenue generators.
Democrat money-grab. Nothing else.
“There’s really no excuse to speed for three blocks.”
Absolutely. Tell that to the idiots (both residents and visitors) that zoom thru our neighborhood. There are multiple 3-block+ segments of streets that these careless people blast along. The good news...kids no longer play outside as they are inside TikTocking, Tweeting, SnapChatting or whatever they heck they do nowadays.
Exactly. It is not about preventing accidents, it’s about revenue.
Of course, Fairfax county was like that when I lived there 30+ years ago.
Yes. And a lot were removed. Maybe re-framung it as child/school safety skirts that ruling somehow?
