Progressives, GOP succeed in blocking Manchin's pipeline deal from national defense bill

Manchin warns American consumers will pay the price for tribal politics..

Sen. Joe Manchin's legislation to spur oil and gas drilling was left out of the must-pass national defense bill after conservative Senate Republicans and progressive House Democrats raised objections.

Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who chairs the Senate Energy Committee, said the move would have serious and long-term consequences for American energy independence.

"The American people will pay the steepest price for Washington once again failing to put common sense policy ahead of toxic tribal politics," he said. "This is why the American people hate politics in Washington."

Democrat leaders were hoping to include the legislation, which overhauls permitting regulations for oil and gas drilling, within the National Defense Authorization Act as a reward for Manchin's support of President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. Those plans were nixed, however, after bipartisan opposition in both the House and Senate.

Within the House, several progressive Democrats threatened to vote against the NDAA if it included Manchin's permitting legislation.

I’m not entirely sure leaving this out is a “win” for the GOP.

I mean - Manchin deserved this failure. But I think overall it’s a loss for the US

The GOP is betting that blocking this bill will kibosh Manchin’s hopes for re-election and get energy prices to the point that Democrat 2024 prospects will evaporate.

[Some Senate Republicans were similarly critical of Manchin’s deal, albeit for much different reasons.

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) told reporters he wanted to see more muscular changes to the permitting process that would require the Biden administration to issue faster approvals for projects.

“I agree with Joe that there should be permitting improvements,” Rounds said, “but you want something that actually requires the administration to follow through.”

However, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), a friend of Manchin’s, said Republicans should recognize that another opportunity to enact permitting changes might not materialize for a while.

“Republicans have come together and said we need to advance permitting reforms,” she said. “If we have an opportunity to do it, let’s do it. Let’s not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”]

#4: "Manchin deserved this failure. But I think overall it's a loss for the US"

Scoring political points at the expense of hurting the country is unacceptable. We need all the oil and gas we can get.

Actually we are paying the price for WV having sent Manchin to the Senate...and then keeping him there. When push comes to shove his “moderate” act is just an act. Leftist policies have been enacted due to his presence and he in the end is there on their side.

Now they don’t need him. If he truly believes the country is heading in the wrong direction as his rhetoric claims, he would resign from the Senate.

If Manchin wants to retain Senator status in 2025 his only chance is to switch party now and spend next two years earning republican trust so he can be a shoe in for the republican 2024 primary. He can’t afford to wait as his value to the republican party lessens every day.

A Democrat from coal country is pushing for a pipeline and not coal?

I don't trust him.

Never mind what the bill's title is it could have illegal medical spending in it.

Why is a pipeline in a national defense bill and why does the federal government have anything to do with a pipeline?

Remember Pelosi on Obamacare? She proudly said: We won't know what's in it until we pass it.

“This is why the American people hate politics in Washington.”

And you are a big part of the reason, Joe.

Sold your vote pretty cheaply didn’t ya?
