Gas prices focus of special California legislative session

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — At Gov. Gavin Newsom’s prompting, California lawmakers kicked off a special legislative session on Monday to consider punishing big oil companies for their supersized profits during a time of record-high gas prices — the start of a likely lengthy process that will test the liberal Legislature’s resolve in the face of fierce industry opposition.

California lawmakers briefly returned to the state Capitol on Monday to swear in new members and elect leaders for the 2023 legislative session. But this year, Newsom also has called lawmakers into a special session for the purpose of approving a penalty for oil companies when their profits pass a certain threshold and then returning the money to drivers.

It could be a popular proposal with voters, who have been paying more than $6 per gallon of gasoline for much of the year. But the big question is how the measure will be received by California lawmakers, especially because the oil industry is one of the state’s top lobbyists and campaign donors.

But Newsom appears ready for the fight. In an unusual move, he attended the swearing-in ceremonies for lawmakers on Monday. When the session began, though, he had not yet revealed the oil profits legislation, and lawmakers likely won’t begin deliberations on it until January.

Bi oil should do what Barrett Industries did. Refuse to do business in the state of California.

Oddly California has much oil sufficient for its state. They refuse to let it be drilled and exploited. I say, “Let them freeze in the dark of winter or sweat in the summer.” It is a self-inflicted wound.

If Einstein was an idiot, Governor Newsom would be at a minimum 100 points below Einstein.

Obvious leftist solution:
1-Raise taxes
2-Subsidies people’s purchase of fuel
3-You’re racist if you disagree

Yeah. I’d dearly love to see that.

Let the bastards that were threatening have to deal with
what they demanded and then got early.

Is it possible for people to be this stupid? Yes I know a person can be declared brain dead by a physician, but these people for some reason are able to keep their lungs and heart functioning. How is that possible when no form of brain seems to exist?

Yes, California politicians and the people who vote for them can actually be that stupid. It would never occur to pretty, pretty Gavin to look to states that don’t have sky-high gas prices what they are doing right?!?!?
The Lilliputians just don’t care......

A political push against fuel production can be expensive.

I just pray that asswipe does not run in 2024 taking Bidens place. It’s obvious as hell the DemoMarxist party wants the entire country like California and you just know they are going to push Newsom as the Messiah

If I were big oil, I’d stop selling gas to Kalifornia. For one thing they have different standards for that state so it only makes sense.

The only reason that I can see for this session is to pin the high prices on the evil oil companies.

The thing is, why would the oil companies only screw-over California, when there are 56 other states?

Answer - because, regardless of who they blame, the REAL REASON that the prices are so high are the invisible upstream taxes, including their carbon taxes. But, for whatever reason, the oil companies won’t defend themselves, so they just bend over and take it (maybe they’re run by Republicans?)

Like they could do anything at all about it. They built their CalEPA, the Air Resources Board, the Cap and Trade. That Cap and Trade thing is the biggest reason California gas prices are the highest in the nation. Your gas prices are tradable in a carbon dioxide market. Take away that, and the price of gas goes down 25% overnight. Only thing is, there is too much money being made selling the ability to stop people from having a fire in their fireplace, or a gas powered automobile.

Oil and gas companies won’t be driven out f business. They will just move out of cali and leave it high and dry. There is no law requiring a company operate in any state. If these morons want to go total EV without the infrastructure to produce electricity, that’s their fault.
