O’Connor tells Mayor Jane Castor she made a ‘personal mistake’
The Tampa Police Department chief who was caught on video flashing her badge during a traffic stop in hopes a deputy would "let her go" has resigned from her position Monday, telling the Florida city’s mayor she made a "personal mistake."
Mary O’Connor and her husband were pulled over by a Pinellas County deputy for driving a golf cart without a license plate tag on Nov. 12. O’Connor was sworn into the position in March after serving the department 22 years and was placed on administrative leave Saturday.
"I would never want my personal mistake to stand in the way of the progress I have made in mending relationships between the police department and the community, so for that reason, I am resigning," O’Connor wrote in a letter penned to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.
"Whether I am wearing a badge or not, my commitment to service and oath of office will remain a part of my everyday life," she added. "I plan to use this time to reflect and spend time with my family and children before moving on to any future endeavors."
Castor tweeted that she had asked for O’Connor’s resignation and now "Assistant Chief Lee Bercaw will serve as acting chief while a comprehensive national search is conducted" for her replacement.

Dang!
Thought that this was going to be a typical “flasher” story...
In some places, people drive their golf carts on the street, for local outings.
“Civilians” I hear/read that all the time like they’re in the army.
No —— Sherlock. I am not supportive of tabs for a license plate. It is just a tax stamp, if the license is for the safety of the police or identification of owner, a stamp doesn’t do a thing.
If the police department is not at least brigade size (4,000+ members), then no stars for you. And only two stars for departments which are division size or less.
Only major cities would rate a 3-star chief.
How far does this courtesy go? local, statewide, the entire nation, world wide maybe just some countries or places?
You don’t know Florida!
“As someone wrote above, there might be some friction between the county and the city and the deputy decided to make an example of her.”
She had been previously fired for striking a fellow officer and kicking his car.
Her husband was driving.
“So it was on the freeway then? Driving 55mph in a golf cart in the fast lane without proper tags?”
No
I have yet to Chief/Sheriff sporting 5 stars. But one has probably done so. Or perhaps blinged up their ASP and made it into a Field Marshal's Baton.
I’ve been a cop for almost two decades. She would still have her job if she identified herself correctly. I’m guessing she was drunk?
The previous Chief and Major, Jane Castor, was accommodated as a homosexual when she was on the job. I guess some people are more equal than others?
golf carts on the road are nothing more than adult power wheels and driven with about as much careless abandon as toddlers high on stolen cookies.
That’s going to leave a mark.
I was the interim City Manager of a small town and was pulled over twice by our local PD. Each time I gladly complied with the LEO’s commands and only after they saw my name they would apologize, which I told them to never apologize to me for doing their jobs and to write me a ticket.
On a golf cart.
A smart person would have paid the deputy back through "channels", later.
Is she related to Hard Left Mayor Castor ?
She was already fired before for a worse crime.
How did she get rehired ?
