At least eight universities have partnered with online sports betting companies, reports The New York Times.
Sports betting is surging across America — with flashy ads and easily accessible apps encouraging wagers both at home and in stadiums — and has slinked its way over to several college campuses as well.
The New York Times recently uncovered that at least eight universities have partnered with online sports-betting companies, while at least a dozen athletic departments and booster clubs have signed agreements with brick-and-mortar casinos.
Personal finance author and radio host Dave Ramsey lambasted the institutions on The Ramsey Show.
“You freakin’ idiots … Selling out your own students who you’re supposed to be caring for,” said Ramsey. “The No. 2 addiction in North America today — and fastest growing addiction in North America today — is online gambling. It starts with the sports betting as a gateway drug.”
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) says researchers estimate about three-quarters of college students gambled in the past year, and 6% have a gambling problem.
More accessibility means students are more susceptible to problem gambling In 2018, the Supreme Court overturned a decision that limited sports betting to Nevada — and now 31 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized online or in-person betting, while five more have passed laws that will allow for it in the future.
The relaxation in rules has apparently extended over to higher education institutions as well of late — online betting company Caesars Sportsbook struck a whopping $8.4 million dollar deal with Michigan State University last year, reports The New York Times.
And the University of Colorado Boulder reportedly collects $30 every time someone uses the university’s promotional code to download the PointsBet gambling app and starts betting.

Universities Are Selling Out Their Students! This Is Disgusting! - Dave Ramsey Rant
Some of these kids are going to become hooked on gambling.
It could become as bad as needing more heroin.
Years after the fact, someone who survives that rollercoaster will think about suing the school for providing such easy access to those gambling sites in the first place.
Some folks find it hard to just walk away once they’ve lost (or won) their first $20.
These same Students just voted for Dems to try & keep the ‘student loan reduction; alive-————
IF they have money to gamble-—then they certainly have money to pay their student loan payments.
How much is Biden getting out of the deals for gambling????
That’s a good question. It should always be the first question with this administration.
“..freaking idiots”..?
I didn’t know Dave Ramsey spoke like that on the air.
Oh well. Now I do.
Does anyone require more proof that “Higher education” is really all about larger salaries and profits, with student education actually the least of concerns?
Let me be in charge one year...just one year.
guess what?...nearly all posters say that its routine for the "students" to get plastered over long weekends....that everybody drank heavy ....
most of them are underage and yet its just wink wink nod nod....universities do not care.....
what about the credit cards?...we’d go to a football game and be inundated with free gear just to sign up....how many creidt cards were basically given to students....
Yep. Universities care more about the revenue it generates from students than the education it gives to students.
Correcting the grammar in my post:
Universities care more about the revenue they generate from students than the education they give to students.
Then of course they’ll look to the dems to cover their losses, under “COVID emergency.”
He doesn’t usually. This is very strong language from him.
Dave Ramsay is great. I owe him a lot.
Harry Anderson would be shakin’ his head at all the dupes and sucker’s...
“guess what?...nearly all posters say that its routine for the “students” to get plastered over long weekends....that everybody drank heavy ..”
Where in the world have you been???
I know that at least thirty, maybe forty, years ago either Playboy or Penthouse used to put out their annual list of the best partying colleges and universities. Just in time to help the young’uns decide which to attend. Now just do a web search and be inundated.
Yep! When I went to college in the early 1990s, they were claiming that “we were allowed to drink” underage while on campus.
And I thought...so the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania somehow are suspended at the campus border?
Just a small introduction to the antinomianism of liberals.
“...Dave Ramsay is great. I owe him a lot.”

Actually, I owe no one else anything partly due to his teachings and encouragement. Became debt free, mortgage and all, just this week. Gonna take FPU for the third time starting in February.
That’s not totally accurate. The biggest frat/sorority houses have been moving off campus, like the one in Idaho, because universities have tried to get a handle on underage drinking and hazing.
I agree with you, the universities could do a Hell of a lot more. I expect to see some minuscule reforms to spring up after they solve this terrible multiple homicides.
