A rare case of corrolation IS causation.
Former mayor Ray Nagin would refer to them as "chocolate cities". Dark chocolate.
A book written several years ago, “The Color of Crime”, was vilified and the author labeled racist for the statistics he used to make his point. The demographics are obvious.
This claim seems to have no basis in math. The US has far from the third highest murder rate in the world to start with and taking out those five cities only makes a marginal (<10%) difference in the per capita murder rate nation wide
There are consequences for voting Democrat.
Even if Republicans controlled those cities, the people would still be killing each other until the underlying cause is addressed.

I dug through the statistics about 45 minutes ago and reached precisely the same conclusion-—though I would add that it did look like taking those five out would drop it by about 9%. Thanks for writing what I didn’t bother to but is worth writing.

This article looks so flawed that I am embarrassed by most of the comments on the thread.

Embarrassed? Put on a dress and swish around for us. Mexican cartels send drugs to those cities. The drugs are distributed by local black gangs, and BY FAR they together are responsible for nearly all of the murders in America.
Alone, the black murderer demographic of less than 1% is responsible for half the murders in America. If you can’t discuss it, you can’t fix it.

Years ago there was a debate on gun control between Orin Hatch and Jesse Jackson. Jesse droned on and on how guns hurt black people and we need strong gun control laws. After about 20 minutes of emotional, albeit factless, diatribe, Hatch look at Jackson and said: “If we remove violent gun crimes committed by blacks between the ages of 18 and 35, the US would rank below Switzerland in violent gun crimes.”

The United States can really be divided up into three types of places. Places where there are no murders, places where there are a few murders, and places where murders are very common.
In 2014, the most recent year that a county-level breakdown is available, 54% of counties (with 11% of the population) have no murders. 69% of counties have no more than one murder, and about 20% of the population. These counties account for only 4% of all murders in the country.
The worst 1% of counties have 19% of the population and 37% of the murders. The worst 2% of counties contain 28% of the population and 51% of the murders. The worst 5% of counties contain 47% of the population and account for 68% of murders. But even within those counties the murders are very heavily concentrated in small areas...
