I see. Yes, I think there are some good reasons why we don’t bother to manufacture artillery in those sizes. But the Russians have always seemed to have a penchant for oversized equipment that looks very impressive, whether or not it is actually effective in a real world situation.

Well, they didn’t all just show up when the Ukraine war started. I remember there being at least a small cadre of dedicated Putin fans on threads related to Russia going back at least 10 years now. But they have certainly become more active and visible now that threads related to Russia are a daily occurrence.

I cannot imagine it is a huge advantage in today’s warfare unless it has some kind of smart rounds. And if it has a smart round, you don’t need to lob a 290 pound bomb. And this thing has a whopping 6 mile range.

Honestly, they would be better off with an old fashioned 105 howitzer and another mile of range and ten times the rate of fire.

This is a 50 year old heavy mortar that is slow and inaccurate as hell, with the comparative short range inherent in all mortars. Bleh.

Yes, volume is the key with dumb artillery.

Haven't been on FR for a long time. When did all these Russian Bots show up?

Coincidentally, it was about the same time that Team Biden started referring to all critics of the administration's extravagant foreign military & financial aid as 'Russian bots'.

;^)

They paved Ukraine and put up a parking lot.

The Joni Mitchell strategy. Always a winner.

Ukraine will rebuild.

Russia’s flattening of Ukraine and attempts to freeze the citizenry and bombing and flattening of cities they claimed were really Russian cities that needed to be liberated, reveals Russia’s true nature and intent.

Russia’s barbaric nature is on full display to the whole world. This was never about Russian speaking people in Ukraine. This was a resource and land grab. And if Russia can’t have an area they try to destroy it.

Pure evil!!

Ok this is just stupid propaganda. I don’t mind hearing truthful stories about Russia doing well, but this is just silly.

Good point. You think if those were real Russian towns the Russians would have been seen as liberators. Forcing them to vote at gun point kind of tells you what is really going on.

Oh and those were the ones that remained behind and didn’t leave for free hotel stays and homes in the west.

What weapons “have no Western equivalents”?

http://www.military-today.com/artillery/2s7_pion.htm

"The 2S7 Pion is a 203 mm self-propelled gun. This artillery system was first observed by Western intelligence in 1975. It is the most powerful conventional artillery system in the world. It was designed to engage remote and important enemy targets, such as hostile command posts and fortified positions."

"The 2S7 Pion is armed with a powerful 203 mm gun, fitted with a load assisting system. It fires ordinary and rocket-assisted HE-FRAG shells, chemical and nuclear shells. A standard HE-FRAG shell weights 110 kg and contains 17.8 kg of explosives. It has a maximum range of 37.5 km. The rocket-assisted shell weighs 103 kg and contains 13.8 kg of explosives. It has a maximum range of 47.5 kg.

"Ammunition load of the 2S7 Pion consists of only 8 shells. Only 4 shells are carried by this artillery system, remaining 4 shells are carried by escorting vehicle. Maximum rate of fire is 1.5 shells per minute.

"Brief out-of-action time allows the Pion to fire 1 or 2 shells and leave its firing position even before the first shell hits its target located up to 47 km away. This shoot-and-scoot capability allows to avoid counter-battery fire."
