NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Civil rights advocates say a Memphis hospital is no longer providing gender-affirming surgeries, a move they argue is illegal and discriminatory.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, Memphis-based Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare alerted their client, Chris Evans, on Nov. 21 that all gender-affirming surgeries were canceled due to a newly adopted policy. Evans, who the ACLU says suffers from gender dysphoria, had been scheduled for a surgery at MLH less than a week later.
The ACLU claims that MLH’s new policy discriminates on the basis of sex, which would violate the nondiscrimination provision the hospital agreed to follow as a Medicaid provider. MLH is also accused of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act because the ALCU argues they’re denying a person with a disability the benefits of a program.
The ACLU demanded in a letter on Wednesday that the hospital “promptly rectify its unlawful actions, and reschedule our client’s surgery, including any other necessary support services, to be performed no later than December 31.”
MLH is one of Tennessee’s largest providers of Tennessee’s Medicaid and uninsured patients. Their website claims they serve more than 128,000 adult Medicaid patients each year.
The ACLU says if the hospital does not respond by Friday, it will file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights.

Doctors should not be encouraging the pathological delusions of the mentally deranged.
Please take this to court, ACLU. I’d love to see the ACLU try to establish that gender transitioning is a more effective treatment for gender dysmorphia than doing nothing and waiting for spontaneous remission.
I know I am preaching to the choir but in the event there any naïve people out there who actually think the ACLU is about civil liberties, then this should convince you. They are no longer needed in 2022 and I do not foresee this changing in the near future.
This is when MLH should partner with a Hospital in Saudi Arabia, give the patient a one way ticket for his operation
There is no such thing as “gender affirming” surgery. That surgery is “sex denying” since it refuses to acknowledge the sex that the person has, but instead promotes the delusion tht it is of the other sex.

“Gender dysphporia” (idenity dysphoria focused on biological gender) is metnal problem reuquiring mental health assistance, not body mutilation intent on satisfying the errant obsession behind “gender dysphoria”. The ACLU is wrong in substituting a political narrative as holding the only possible, only “right” “solution” to “gender dysphoria”.
Compassion, sympathy and understanding, yes, but not body mutilation.

Is the new medical creed now "First do maximum harm"? That seems to be the case in more than one area of medicine these days.
If the hospital refuses to mutilate either males or females, how is that sex discrimination?
True. When a kid finally realizes what he/she has between their legs, they should be taught by their parents. My older sister and I took baths together as little kids. When we were 5-6 we no longer did. My parents made sure we knew what we were- a boy and a girl.
Who funds the ACLU?
Yep. It worked well for almost 50 years with abortion.
