The chairman of Otzma Yehudit, MK Itamar Ben Gabir, filed this morning (Thursday) a defamation lawsuit for about 150 thousand NIS through attorney Hanmal Dorfman against Haaretz newspaper and reporter Haim Levinson after publishing a long series of defamations and lies in Haaretz newspaper against him. "Haaretz newspaper published a false, falsified article that constitutes severe libel, despite knowing that the facts, to say the least, are not true," it said. Also, in the statement of claim, it is detailed that Levinson and Haaretz published an article against MK Ben Gvir, according to which MK Ben Gvir objected to filing a complaint with the police due to an incident of sexual harassment, when the things did not exist, were made up and were false and slanderous.
"The Haaretz newspaper forgot that the elections were over and continue to mark me as a target to discredit me and publish slander. The false smear campaign against me will not deter me, and those who lie will pay," said Ben Gvir.
Are defamation suits as hard to win there as in the U.S.?
I would say so.
What country is this
Haaretz was first published in 1918 as a newspaper sponsored by the British military
Ok I looked it up myself
Defamation suits by public figures are absolutely easier and possible in Israel. Netanyahu won a defamation suit against ex-PM Ehud Olmert just a couple weeks ago. That could never happen in the US given Supreme Court rulings.
Haaretz has shifted to radical liberalism since around 2000.
