MIAMI (AP) β An Atlantic hurricane season with 14 named storms officially ended Wednesday, though residents of Florida and Puerto Rico will continue to deal with damage caused by Hurricanes Ian, Nicole and Fiona.
The 2022 period had an unusually calm first half but made up for that with the three destructive hurricanes in the second half, ending with an average number of named storms. The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
This year had eight hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph (119 kmh), and two of them intensified to major hurricanes with winds reaching at least 111 mph (179 kmh), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. An average hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes, forecasters said.
This season was notable for a record-tying inactive August. This year was the first time since 1941 that the Atlantic Ocean has gone from July 3 to the end of August with no named storm, Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said. Since 1950, only 1997 and 1961 had no named storms in August.

Well apparently there were tornadoes last night to balance it out. STOOPID climageddonists.
Yup, queue up the predictions that were made back in June ... then compare.
Butt, butt, butt, Climate Emergency....
Da Erf has a FEVER!
Above normal, below normal, and average are all equally signs of impending catastrophic global warming DOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!
There is only ONE solution to the problem of an average number of storms of average duration and average destruction and average time on land and average wind speed and average ocean surge: Tax ourselves trillions and trillions of dollars.
Due to Climate Change (c) this year was unusually average. It’s going to get averager and averager until it’s completely average and we’re all gonna die. Well, an average number of us, anyway.
NOAA’s predictions were so wide there was almost no way they would have been wrong.
What??? Where is the Global Warming, Massive Hurricanes, Damage, Destruction that’s unparalleled for all time!!!!!!
Excellent !
Like most climate science, they predict... And when they're wrong they never talk about it again... Case in point... Mount Kilimanjaro.
Notice the snow... That Al Gore said would be gone by 2016?
Al Gore is deeply disappointed.
Ah but the strawberries hurricanes! They laughed at me and made jokes about global warming, but this proves beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with geometric logic, that climate change is real!
Damn you Global Warming....
....for producing an average season!
LOL, Kam-Ella speak...
The number of “named storms” is basically a meaningless statistic. NHC is populated by climate change-ists who name every cluster of thunderstorms where they catch a 39 mph wind gust. In decades past, storms were only named when they had a clear circulation and defined tropical cyclone form.
This is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Kind of like votes for democrats, they will create/imagine what they need to make the dire predictions look like they came true.
but a lot of weird tornados
